using a 95 2.2 ECU in a 96 2.2????
Monday, July 18, 2005 7:09 PM
will the 95 (OBD1) ecu plug right into the 96 (obd2) harrness? did they have 3spd tranny's in 95?

will the 95 ecu run the 98+ 2200 injectors? also will it run the 96+ 2.2 o2 sensors?

yes i have a 2.2/2200 hybrid engine! [which i wana make obd1]

the only problem is in 95 they still used batch fire fuel injection, and in 96 they switched to sequential fuel injection, which requires a cam sensor. (which you have now)

Why not try using a 98 computer?

if you wanted to run a 95 you would have to wire your injectors into a batch fire setup, and then somehow control the fuel so as to half the duty cycle. (at least I think)

I dont know what you're so worried about running OBDII. A 96 computer does not need a second O2 sensor, if thats what you're concerned about.

I've been driving my car for almost 4 years with no second o2 sensor and have never thrown a code once about it.

so the 98 ecu will still work with the 96 bottom end?

have you checked your ecu with a code reader? i'm had my cat hollowed out and it threw a silent code (no CEL) on the second o2 sensor.

The only thing I can think of that is different is that a 95 ECU is OBDI and 96+ is OBDII...not sure what difference that is.

as far as I know aside from the pistons being a slightly higher comp ratio on the 2200, and the camshaft being less aggressive, the block is still the same.

and yes, I checked with a code reader, no 02 sensor code.

you may have to swap to a 2200 cam, as I dont think anyone has successfully done a 96 cam swap.

may as well grab a 2200 harness with the ecu while you're at it.

with a 2200 ecu you will need that 2nd o2 sensor though.

the 95 also has no cam position sensor... or is it crankshaft position sensor... one of the two if not both lol. and i believe the 95 autos were OBDII, while the manuals were OBDI.

from what i understand, only the automatic 95s were OBD2.

I don't think so, because of the sequential fuel injection that started in 96, your injectors are wired wrong for the 95 computer.

I dont believe you..

I thought batch fire computers only had 2 injector drivers, how did you overcome the incorrect wiring of the old injector harness?

what am I missing?

I must be missing something too because stevefire what you say is indeed accurate.

ok, i knew i shouldnt have asked this kinda question here, i'll just go to a junkyard and spend $30 and get a 95 3spd/at ecu and plug it in, if it works, then i'm all good to go, if not i'm only out $30.

you can go from obd-I to obd-ii with no problems. now its a whole diferent story when you go obd-II to obd-I, due to all the diferent sensors. you may have to re-wire the injector harness.
