ecotec fuel mystery SOLVED!!!!!!!!
Friday, June 23, 2006 5:21 PM
ok so I broke down, gave up on my MegaSquirt build, and bought HP tuners.

best friggin $650 I've ever spent in my life!

but anyway, on to the findings:

problem: my 03+ ecotec boosted/ modified car keeps leaning out no matter how much pulsewidth/fuel pressure I add! what gives?

cause: delving in the programs of ecotec ecus, and having HPT at my disposal, as well as their .bin and .hpt resources, I compared an 02 and 04 ecu on the computer.

solution: under the ENGINE tab, and the fuel control, you'll see power enrichment PE enable

as you can see, the power enrichment table isn't engaged until 6200rpm so yes for those last 300rpm we have open loop haha

bring that sob down... I reprogrammed mine for 500rpm... now under wide open throttle, i have open loop air/fuel ratio constants <3 <3 <3

isnt 500 a bit low? like economy would suck?I really dont think you care about gas milage anyways. But If you did I would set it for like 3100rpms.

So, was that for the 02 or 04 ECU?

The '98 2200 that we played with had PE kick in at 5000, and we thought that was ridiculous! I'd set it at around 3200 or so, you don't want to be in PE mode for all kinds of driving, I'm assuming you only set it so low for comparison purposes though. My '01 LD9 had PE kick in at 3400 stock, that almost seems like GM made a mistake in the program for those cars?

you guys forget, PE is only engaged if the following circumstancs are met:

RPM, and throttle position.

so yes, my PE engages anything above 500, but only if i'm WOT

I CALLED IT ALL ALONG! I'VE BEEN SAYING FROM DAY ONE THAT THERE WAS SOMETHING WEIRD ON THE 04 ECU AND NOW I AM PROVEN RIGHT. I LOVE IT!!!

the 02 eco File I'm looking at is set to 5600........ and the 03 at 6300 (both are 5speeds)

Never understood why its set so high...... maybe thats why their only 140hp......

^^ did you update to 2.1.11 beta code? it keeps the ignition timing advancing past 6400rpm... if you didn't, i suggest you do car pulls even better since timing doesn't ramp out after 6400

id go to 7500 if i could, but im not confident the engine will hold up to that, it would be the perfect shift point for my power curve though

I'm thinking about staying n/a a little longer and rocking the patriot stage 2 head (i know lots of people dont like them) but that will give me better V.E. and better hp up top. I know the stage 2 would kind of be detrimental to bottom end torque, but thats ok I want to focuse on upper mid range and high end power. Thinking about re timing my cams so that they'll make peak power higher in the rpm band too with GM adjustable cam gears. Not sure what patriots cams are good for or what kind of power you're lookin at I geuss I'll contact them when I'm ready.

Last night I fine tuned my fuel curve using High RPM VE table, now at WOT my AFR is sticking right on the 12.5 line from 3800 to 6500, vs the 10.3-11.7 afr it was running in there before. Next Ill hit that lower rpm table and do the same for 3000 up, Im going to the track later on today, I would like to get some dyno time and actually see if there are any gains.

i have to burn off the rest of this regular gas crap and put some 93 in there

then i can finally start messing with timing.. but i'm not touching fuel until i grab a wideband o2

Yep... and I said it was most likely staying in closed loop longer. It's just GM trying to get better fuel economy ratings.

does anyone have the 2.1.11 they can send me. I guess you need to have HPT registered to your car in order to download it. I'm in afghanistan right now and cant register my car with the program.
