HPTuners Tuning experience #1
Wednesday, July 19, 2006 9:53 PM
Well, fate would have it that the first car I tune on HPTUNERS is a 1998 2200 5spd TURBO.

Yup... the engine is fully built, T3/04e 60 trim turbo running Brown top injectors.

Weeks ago when the car was completed it would barely idle, chugged smoke, logged a 10.0 - 12.0 afr at idle and off the gauge rich at 5psi....

As of tonight the following has been achieved:

250 km/h VSS
6800 rpm redline (stock is 6000)
Lower fan operating temp - car doesn't go above 195 now
Fan runs for 4 mins after car is off
Brown tops idle like stock and have a stock cold startup
12.0 - 12.2 AFR under boost @ 10psi
DFCO's altered to achieve stock coast-down - car had a MAJOR studder
0 Knock Retard
Simple high octane stock advance for now

With all that said, the car will be tuned in a few weeks to a full 15 psi with a 2 bar map sensor... I will advance the timing when I have the proper sensor to do what I want to do.

Keeping all this in mind - the car went from being an idling pig and a low-rpm chugging slug into a low-rpm monster and a high-rpm screamer. Black smoke is a thing of the past.

A 2200 at 6800 RPM is a sweet sweet sound, especially when it's pumping 10 psi of boost with no FMU or other bandaid.

I think I love this software.

As I said fully built sunfire... actually some of the head parts are from JBP but he didn't build the motor. Pushrods are good to 7000 rpm.

To get the AF ratio basically we drove the car and adjusted the VE tables until things were close to perfect. I'll iron it out better in a few weeks.

Kevin - no problem man.

FstCav - I'm tryin!

Darren - just for you....

Hey Chris, what was it like tuning for partial throttle low/mild boost? Since our cars "fuel" maps persay are mostly off TPS, isnt it hard to get a good a/f ratio reading for off WOT situations? Or does the cars ECU do taht mostly on its own along with the new injector constant?
Re: HPTuners Tuning experience #1

Hey buddy...

A bit of both actually... once I pegged the right constant I modified the lower rpm VE tables in the partial throttle range so the AF was satisfactory and then turned my attention to high throttle VE... in all honesty its REALLY easy to work with when you get the hang of it.

Either way, you wouldtn ever get it perfect due to harder/softer acceleration, but, deffinatly 100 percent better than with any other bandaid. Chris, I havent seen HPT software first hand, you wouldnt mind listing the "fuel" maps that are there to adjust. High throttle VE, are you talking about power enrichment? Explain a little bit.

There are like 7 or 8 different fuel maps.

HO and LO tables
HO and LO PE tables
High RPM tables
Low RPM tables
yada yada

If I had the program opened I could list them all out right.

The first four you named there were spark tables, not fuel maps...

High RPM VE
Low RPM Single Fire
Low RPM Double Fire
Low RPM Coastdown
Idle

Well i gave my car a good test this weekend by taking her up to the cottage in the muskokas. And let me tell you that she ran like a champion! ......Passing Cars in 5 Gear has never been more easy. and dropping gear to get some VRRRRRRRRRMMMMMMMMM PSSSSSHHHHHHT action was a blast. At cruising my WB02 was steady at 14.5 and WOT was a nice 12.5 @ 10 PSI......Theres a little bit more tuning to be done becasue i'm not really getting much more power past 5500-6000 rpm even though AF ratio is good....but in all honesty.....you don;t need to go that high......But its always nice!....I have a question and i'm not to sure if chris has the answer for it yet but has anyone experienced low RPM Chugging on DECCELERATION? i'm talking 3500RPM and lower in 1st, 2nd and 3rd?.....Chris and i thought we corrected the problem by adding more fuel to deccelearation but that hasen't helped........So please let me know what you guys think?....also...there is a table missing in the 2200 HPT program that could possible fix this problem...i can't remember what it is but when we looked at chris's PCM....he had the table....and i don;t.....WEIRD!...

PS...I blew a Axle Boot on the way up there....I'm guessing i have to take the wheel and the axle nut off to get to the boot to slide it off and a new one back on.....Correct me if i'm wrong please....

BUT F#&K It feels AMAZING to Be BOOSTED!!!!
