Is it possible to hook up an aftermarket fuel gauge?

Is it possible to hook up an aftermarket fuel gauge? i have a 2.4 auto. Some mechanics i work with says that their is no way they know of to do this because it will give the computer false readings. if their is a way anybody know how?

The mechanics you work with may of mistaken you is saying a sending unit and not the actual gauge. I would believe you would be able to as long as the gauge is adjustable as to be able to work with the sending unit's operating range.

ya, im just not sure if anybody has done it..... and what type of gauge i would need to buy and how to do it. im clueless about this lol.

My autometer works just fine, I used the existing wire in the cluster.

isaak- so you tapped into the the factory cluster? if you could explain in more detail thatd be awesome im trying to explain this to a mechanic lol

My autometer gauge has 3 inputs, 12v, ground and sending......... I believe its the purple wire in the cluster I used, but I am not 100% sure, I do not have the schematic infront of me. It was that easy, atleast for me.
