Apparently, C/F hoods make your engine run hotter!

Some idiot on another forum was being a prick about "ricer" cars, saying that a c/f hood will insulate the engine and in stop and go traffic it will overheat the car.

I told him to shove off, and that the radiator cools the engine. Sure, driving makes it run a little cooler, but the fact is that the air being passed through the radiator's fins is from the outside, and in stop and go traffic the fan kicks on. So it draws air in from outside. The diffference in temp with a c/f cannot be anything but marginal.

Just wanted to make sure I didn't make an ass out of myself: am I right?

well, since most carbon fiber hoods have some sort of either vent or ram air opening on the top of it, i'd assume that if the car was sitting still, warm air would escape through those openings. as far as carbon fiber hoods being an insulation, i can't see how they would insulate the engine any more than a stock metal hood. i think the guy was probably talking out of his ass.

rofl yeah, he replied with something along the lines of "oh uh..um, I meant C/F on stock cars will make them work harder, since tuned cars usually have some beefier cooling system..."

to which I replied:

"You're a moron. A metal hood will insulate the engine just as much as that c/f hood will, if anything, it will be worse b/c the hood is METAL."

I love messing with this guy b/c he's one of those "Car&Driver" quoters...

I think the fact that the CF hood is lighter and therefore less dense means that it would retain less heat than the metal hood. You are all good.

so if tuned cars have a beefier cooling system, that would explain why they are cooler than a stock car... duh. what a 'tard.
