moisture in tail light - what to do???
Wednesday, March 30, 2005 12:31 PM
i've got an '04 cavalier. i put on the rksport carbon fiber trunk bezel and the tyc carbon look tails. the the left (driver's side) part of the light in the trunk is collecting moisture. it seems that it's not flush agains the carbon fiber and metal at the top. i need to fix this as soon as i can. please leave suggestions on how to remove the moisture and prevent it from collecting more.

use a hairdryer to dry out the lens, then use some clear silicone and seal all the way around the light. my old altezzas got moisture in them and i just dried them out and resealed them and never had a problem after that.

ok, the hair dryer isn't working. there is a lens over the area that contains the bulb, and a seperate one that covers the carbonfiber and all. the moisture has somehow gotten between the lens and i can't figure out where or how. would it be easier to contact tyc and try to get a replacement, or to fix the problem myself?

Let me know what you find out, TYC told me that all warranties are to be handle through the company you bought them from. If they are not an authorized dealer , TYC will not honor the warranty. They will not sell just pieces either.

TYC wont replace it, ill almost guarantee it. Take the hairdryer and blow it INTO the inside where the moisture is. if that dont work, heat it up, and remove the lens, then clean it, and re-seal with clear silicone. its not hard

i emailed tyc, they've contacted hyperformanceauto.com (where i bought it) and they told me i need to get ahold of tim from there to get this situation fixed. so hopefully i'll get a replacement piece.
the hair dryer method didn't work. should i need to the take the light apart, how would i go about doing so? thanx

Just trade them to me for my stockers. That'll fix your problem.

I had the same problem and occasionally it still happens if it rains really bad. I used clear silicon to seal them, you can get a small tube for like $3. I also drill a hole in the bottom of each one with a really small drill bit, 1/16 i think it was, so the water leaks out if any gets in then the condesation doesnt build up inside the light. When you tighten them did you push down on the front of the light? (where the lens is) to make sure its back as far as it can go? The cheap plastic parts dont pull the light in much, dont over tighten them because they break easy. Hope this helps

i did push on the light and the upper left (driver's side) corner wasn't (and still isn't) flush with the carbon fiber bezel or the trunk. there's no stud for a speed nut right behind there, and i can't tighten the other nuts any more. i'm gonna call the company that i got them thru to see if i can get a replacement, if not, i'll definitly be posting back askin for more detailed info. thanx for all the advice.

I drilled a tiny hole in a lower corner so the water could drain. No more foggy lenses and it rains here a lot in the winter months.

ok, so TYC doesn't want to deal with then, even tho they made the parts. and hyperformanceauto.com never seems to answer their phone, it seems that i got dicked on this deal. if anyone can give me detailed instructions on how to open up the tails so i can dry and reseal with silicon, that'd be great. thanx.
