Not every branch is turning away possible recruits, the Marine Corps has just had it's end strength increased by about 3,000 Marines, and the Army about 6,000. The Marine Corps unfortunately missed it's Reucriting Quota for the first time in 114 months, and most of that is due to the increase in end strentgh and the casualties suffered during the war. Of the 1,300+ KIA in Iraq only a combined 41 have come from the Air Force and Navy, so as you can see how the Marine Corps and Army are in a really @!#$ty situation, with recruiting goals.

Now I am in no way saying that there will be a draft, because there won't. I'm just pointing out the reality of the situation and the different situations that Each branch is currently facing.

simply put;

all of the people that do not want a draft should do all that they can to support the military, they are the ones doing what you do not want to do to give you the choice not to do it.

Simply put, i think there are 552 people that should be over fighting in Iraq before they institute a draft.

That should be The president, the vice president, all 100 senators, all 435 representatives, and all 15 cabinet members.

I fully agree with what you are saying though. I havre family that has been over there and it seems more and more everyday that they stray further from agreeing with what's happening with this war.

touche KOTL, but you have to realize that no matter how fitting it would be most of them would not be able to enlist.

and if they did they would just commission themselves with enough rank to stay far enough away from anything more dangerous than a stray golf ball from the driving range.

just like the last election, it is a lose lose situation.

Comissioned or not, you do see the problem inherent in the system there. The politicians have no vested intrest in the lives of the soldiers. That's one of the things that has gone wrong. Ideally, if bush was so hard-up against Iraq, he would either go himself, or send his daughters first.

I think that the last president that truly cared about the US soldiers was Eisenhower. He was the only recent president that fought in a war, and he knew what the grunts were going through. Say what you will about Kennedy being a good president, but remember, he was one of the factors that got us involved in Vietnam.

...and when Bush wasn't busy dodging the draft, he was busy driving his Dodge into trees while he was drunk off his ass...

Well..

GHW Bush was an aviator in WWII,
I think Reagan was in the Army, but I might be wrong there,
Carter was in a military branch, as was Ford, and Nixon, but I'm entirely certain of which ones for them.

GW Bush isn't the FIRST president to have never served in a military unit (meaning a regular military), but he is the first one to have scoffed that he might have had a dubious out for the lack of credited time. (I've writen about it here more than once... search "Comped service Units." in msg bodies.)
