Is polygamy a social construct of our culture(s) (in which case you'd probably find evidence of some cultures cheating more then others), or are we born to 'be polygamous'?

If the later, then it involves the phenotypic expression of genes. While it may not be one singular gene, it is the experession and result of a complex interaction between innumerable genes that we all presumably possess.

okay, let me clarify.

Fior animals that are naturally monogamous, they stay with the other of the pair for life--and it's biologically driven. Most birds are like this.

few mammals (and non of the primates) are natrually monogamous--they have no internal chemical or hormonal "trigger" that makes them NEED to be with the other half of the pair. Maybe for a short time periood, but after that, it's over.

Humans like other of the primate order, aren't. If we were, then by the best of logistics, you would be with the first person you ever had sex with (or at least the first virgin), no one else would seem beautiful, and you would be devastated on the point of sucicuidalness if you ever lost them.

Humans aren't like that. No matter how string the pairing is, other people seem beautiful to you.

This behavior, while most likelty controled by genetics, is not a simple gene trigger in humans--it's not loke some humans have biological monogamy and some have to relie on societal pressures. ALL humans rely on societal pressures.

You answered a question I did not ask, or rather a point I did not make.

No one is arguing whether or not we are polygamous... sure we are. No one is arguing whether or not we are influenced by social and cultural pressures... sure we are.

The contradiction lies what you refer to as 'natural' and then say it is NOT genetic.

If it is to be natural, then it is to be genetic. No one-to-one pairing is necessary... rather, many genes can interact in complicated ways unknown to us to result in the phenotypic tendancy towards cheating. Reference Supervenience for clarification.

Now, in your original statement, if you meant to say there in no one single human gene (that some may or may not have) that is responsible for cheating, then I would agree. It is a complex myrid of genes that we all contain that results in our polygamy. However, when you place that claim against what is 'natural' it confuses the issue and makes it look like you are seperating what is 'natural' from what is genetic.

In which case, for clarification, you'd have to define what you refer to as natural, and why it does not involve genetics.
