First of all let me say this..I'm not trying to be a jerk
I'm just wondering what you guys/girls feel the point in modding the engine is..
Is it just you guys doing the best with what cha got or what?..if so i can respect that

same reason anyone mods every single other engine that has been made in the past 50 years

Exactly...live with what you have and make do. Unless you spend major coin it's going to be slow. But every little bit at least helps

ok i understand doing the best with what you got but even after modded you will still be beaten by 2.4's and eco's

Not if you do extensive engine work. Lowfire is going to have a badass 2.2 when he's done...just wait and see

but why do extensive engine work on such a low end engine when u could be doing it to a 2.4 or eco?

First, you don't see a modded 2.2 (eco or OHV) very often.

Second, because you don't see it, you stand out from the crowd

Third, Standing out from the numbing sameness of the Tuner crowd is what the idea of the hobby is all about.

The Question why mod (insert Engine/vechicle code or name here) has been asked for years, and if you have to ask why, then you just don't get the hobby. It's like asking "why do people climb mountains?"... Because they can.

Because you`re stuck with that engine ?

99% of people are not going to change the car or engine just so they can modify. Almost all use it as a daily driver, so there is not much point there.

I find that heavily modifying 2.2l is pointless since you spend a lot of money on engine without significant aftermarket support and you end up pioneering a lot of stuff... which is cool, but not exactly the most reliable way to build for racing application.

modding a 2200/2.2 must be as worthless as living in omaha, ne, eh?

my car will never be heavily modded just due to the fact it falls at the bottom of my list of priorities, doesn't mean i don't respect other peoples work whether i like it or not. who gives a rats ass what engine anyone mods.

and i ask you, leet ricerboy...WHY THE HELL NOT?

people always ask me why do i do what i do to a Corolla - because how many tastefully modified Corollas do you see on the road? VERY few. my corolla's a 1.8L but you don't see me sitting here saying it's the bestest motor ever...by the way, keep in mind that Volkswagen has a turbo 1.8L engine that's faster than your little 2.2L...

people ask me why i like RX7s - just how many do you see actually driving on the road(not being thrown around corners, etc)? again, not all that many.

i do it because i like it. i do it because i can. i do it because that's the only cure for this itch i started scratching years ago. i can't stop...i love it too much.

please, fenix...use a better example...

the 99-00 civic Si has a 1.6l engine faster the a 2.2 ohv. And that one is n/a.

anyhow, why ask why? Some people do it because they enjoy doing it (and in my book, the pioneer gets a lot more credit than the limpdick that bolds some plastic to the bottom trim of his car and calls it "original").

modding a 2.2 OHV is pointless. 2.2eco or 2.4tc all the way, thats if you going to modifty a jbody..

A turbo engine that can beat a N/A engine? NO WAY! thats unpossible

1. Why is this in the war forum?
2. Cause it's what I've got and it's really not worth swapping. Money vs gain - it's a real waste given what I could do for the money(and time) it would take to swap.
3. Any engine/car can be fast. It's called knowing how to get the job done and being able to properly execute such plans.
4. I love my engine, like the rest of my car, it is immortal!!
5. Kicking yet another "superior" engine's ass is priceless and never gets old. Who ever thinks that a 2.2 OHV can't possibly beat a 2.4 or 2.2 eco, doesn't know what they're talking about(cause I've owned a 2.4 before and have beat them too).
6. Thing is, most people seem to think that their engine is the best thing since sliced bread. If these people looked objectively, they'd see that we're not really that far apart(stock for stock). You see we all kinda suck(stock), some suck slightly less than others, but we all still suck none the less.
7. Not all 2.2s are created equal. Besides the fact I got a definite factory freak for sure, I do believe the 92-93 2.2, (perhaps courtesy of a camshaft specific to those 2 years) made a much nicer(wider and higher up) power curve than later 2.2s(much less off the line torque but a lot better HP curve higher up - almost feels like turbo lag). Anyhow even when I was stock, I never found another 2.2 that could compete(not saying they didn't exist - just didn't find them).

I know a lot of people think it is pointless to work on a 2.2L (even with a 3spd auto) but at the time when I was working on mine I didn't think of it that way. I didn't make a lot of money and what I did make went into the car. That and I had specific goals I wanted to achieve with it which I did and I am personally happy with it.

It is rare to see some nicely built 2.2's nowadays. I admit I use to get hammered on when I was working on it, but after racing it around a little, I got a little more positive feedback from people. I surprised some eco and 2.4 guys running around.

I personally thought it was a nice little motor to get my feet wet in basic engine buildups when I was first learning.

Have a good one,
Justin

while it's not 100% on the exact title's topic, it does have to do with what you've asked. the question - the BASIC reason behind it - is why do it?

and i still ask you - WHY NOT?
