XBOX 360, PS3, Nintendo revolution. Which one?
Tuesday, May 17, 2005 9:22 AM on j-body.org
Well, with all 3 systems releasing photos and specs within days of each other, OT is cluttered with new topics, and I have no idea which one to post in.

I figured a new thread was in order to let us discuss strenghts and weaknesses, personal preferences, whatever.

What do you think? Which system do you think will come out on top as the new king of consoles?

Now, Xbox has a more powerful system, and a few stellar exclusive games. As of now, I'd take an xbox any day over any of the other consoles. However, it looks like Xbox, although they have an earlier release, may not hold the crown any longer. The technical specs look impressive for both 360 and ps3 (haven't seen Nintendo's yet, but Nick's post in OT says they are unveiling in a few hours), but since I'm not technically savvy, they don't mean as much to me as some of you.

What does all this mean for developers? What do you think?

It means I'm still going to spend $3500 on a computer before I buy a Game machine.

Transeat In Exemplum: Let this stand as the example.

Has anyone seen Full Auto? It's an xbox 360 launch game, built on the havoc engine. It's basically a racing game that combines Burnout style racing with Twisted Metal style rampage action. Everything in the environment is fully destructible, from building fronts, to windows, to power lines...everything. And on top of that, it obviously looks beautiful. That game alone is enough to convince me to buy a 360 (among others, but I love twisted metal). I just hate that it's 6 months down the road, minumum.
After November, I won't be seen for several months.

I'll still be picking up a PS3 at some point as well, especially since it won't be released for several months later.

I'll probably get the xbox and ps3, right now, I still rep. the ps2, I had an xbox, the special edition one that came with Halo, but I just never played it, the Xbox never really interested me....but what does interest me at the moment, is Ghost Recon 3 on the 360...it just looks unbelievable. Looks like I'll probably be getting the 360 with that then a few months down the road, a ps3 I can't wait

I know this is off topic, but is kinda related to what GAM said.

Has anyone seen any cards of newer systems? By cards I'm talking about cards, similar to video cards, that you could install on a computer to play SNES, NES, and SEGA games. I haven't seen them in forever, just wandering if anyone has.

It would mean not buying a new system, completely....

Umm... that's why there are emulators. No need at all for any additional hardware. Just have to download a few (emulators/plugin combinations) for any given system(better to have different ones in case game "x" doesn't work on one - it should on another) You can easily find and download old roms on numerous websites(as well as cd rom images(mount as virtual cd rom with daemon tools or convert format with various programs and burn on cd)) Many use bittorrent to download. If you need details just ask - but I think you'll do just fine to use a search engine for all this.

I've never heard of this "part throttle" before. Does it just bolt on?

Real arcade hardware ROMS only will work in a propriatary arcade enclosure boards.. not PCs..

They dont make them for older game systems because you dont need them, your PC cpu can more than handle any old platform game AND arcade rom files.

Are you sure you have been using ROMS since 95? what kind of ROMS are you talking about hardware? software?

The problem with this is that you spend 3500, just to have it outdated in 2-3 years. then this part burns out, $250 replace so so graphics card $$$ Just not worth IMO

I think nintendo has pretty much committed it's self to the youth market. As for the compition between the PS3 and Xbox 360, Personally, i would go with the Xbox. No real reason, just because

Games may not be out yet, but there are plenty of trailers to go around. There are also a few console release games that are sequels, such as Project Gotham Racing 3 that I definately want to pick up that I don't even need to watch a trailer for.
