Books.. What sceptered things...
Monday, July 25, 2005 1:32 PM on j-body.org
I just read (okay listened to, I can't read and run prints at the same time) a few books that are really interesting, and I had to share... I encourage everyone to put out a few of the books the read regarding politics (if you lean that way):

Eric Schlosser - Reefer Madness... Sex, Drugs and Cheap Labour in the American Black Market
David Brock - The Republican Noise Machine
David Brock - Blinded By The Right.
Barry Glassner - The Culture of Fear
Elaine Pagels - The Origin of Satan
Thomas Cahill - How the Irish Saved Civilisation.

Now, just so you don't think I'm all about Left-wing stuff, I have *read* Ann Coulter's 2 books, Treason and How to talk to a Liberal if you must... and I can honestly say that I want those 6 hours back. Most of what was being eschewed is pure opinion, and not backed up by any facts that are readily verified. I guess she shoulda stayed a judge's clerk.

I read Rush Limbaugh's book back in 1996 or so.

You know, if Republican policy actually matched Republican doctorine, (small government, personal responsibility/liberty, fiscal responsibility), I'd still be a Republican myself.

I'll have to give some of those a look. I read 'Fast Food Nation' by Schlosser and it wasn't too bad. Apparently, many people around me tell me that I am 'odd' for still reading books. Their loss, not mine.

Well, for me reading is something I don't have a lot of time for, but I susbstitute by getting audio books... I also have to confess, reading some of this stuff puts me to sleep.

I can really only tolerate sci-fi short stories, or things like Steven King.

I think everyone should read John Ralston Saul's "Voltaire's Bastards" and for the strong minded who can sift though tons of speculation laced with some fact, Milton William Cooper's "Behold a Pale Horse"

Thanks for the suggestions GAM.

PS: My latin is actually making progress.. I can now describe a white or brown dog, blue hair, man, woman, children of both genders, and I can count to DECEM

Yes, OK there's more, but certainly not conversation, yet.

Heh... I'm learning Gaelic again (my Grandparents spoke it) It's not easy.

I'll post a few more later, but a few more:

George Orwell - 1984
George Orwell - Animal Farm
Ray Bradbury - Farenheit 451
Isaac Asimov - I, Robot

All very good fiction works that really draw amazingly close parallels to todays society, despite being written (as late as) over 30 years ago.

Ooookay.. I'm SO going to get burned for this next one, but I don't believe someone's work should be discredited or ignored unless it isn't researched, and after looking at the book itself, and finding the footnotes, I think it's safe to say it was at least researched:

Micheal Moore - Dude, Where's My Country?
Michael Chricton - State Of Fear (fiction)
Tom Clancy - Into the Storm (non-fiction)

I have about 15-20 more books to listen to (averaging about 8 CDs), so I 'll let everyone know what's worth reading in my opinion.

Anyone else? Any good non-fiction readers?

Reading is so 20th century.. I'm SO over that..

Animal farm is indeed a masterful story.. very enjoyable read. But I must admit, being a programmer affords me only the will to dabble with fiction.. fantasy for the most part.. and that being R.A. Salvatore..

Yes I'm a Drizzt Do'Urden nuthugger.. and damn proud of it..
