It depends...

Sincei parallel GAM's definition:

A poorly done-up car which carries the product badge of an asian comapny in which the owner does it up not for any specific goal (show-winning, autoX, racing, or even somethign ęsthetically pleasing to them), but rather does it up for the superficial illusion or to be percieved as part of a clique is rice.

The same stiuation, but which is branded by an american company, i call "Barley" or "Corn"

But really, the day i stop using that term as an insult is the day i'm no longer a "cracka", "gaijin", "Gringo", et. al. That ain't going to happen, so tough rocks.

Im pretty sure the word came from "negro" which is spanish for black.

As for the topic....
The word rice used to be derogative a few years back when only old hondas and other japanese cars were being "riced". Nowadays all sorts of beeter cars (old neons, escorts) are being "riced" (altezza tails, hubcap spinners) So the word rice pretty much lost its initial meaning. Today it is just a word. Kind of like seing a lowered 66ish impala and saying its "pimp".

while some foreign auto makers now build cars in the US, they are still designed overseas and all profit follows back overseas

ok lets be realistic for a sec....

matt, what makes your car any more superior than an import...????

as we can let the recollective record reflect and have plenty witnesses, you ran 15.7 in stock form

stripped your car last oct ran a 16.1

added a supercharger and ran 16.3

yea yea you have bugs, understandable... however your car in all reality is a economy minded sport compact... and while people can do great things with a cavalier, so can those with imports.

asian cars are wonderful, but then so are european, just the same as american.... each have their advantages and drawbacks depending on the type of racing or use of the car... all can be overcome.

hell we as cavalier drivers have been feenin for an independant rear suspension swap from an N-body, which most EVERY IMPORT comes with in STOCK form... thats a limitation that we have when it comes to road racing and general handling....

we have to go out of our way to fabricate, which only 2 or 3 people have done so far....

they get it when they buy the car, more adjustment means more options.

if you wanna be generally technical a small bit....

asian cars are known for small displacement and more top end....

not like the torque monsters we have here in the us.... but with that torque we get off the line quicker....

however the asian car (granted similar in class and mods) will catch up when we start leveling out in top end...

european cars are usually a mix between the two mentioned beforehand....

so really, maybe you said it as a joke, maybe not, but it would be showing your own stupidity if you think your car is so much better than an import.... as it stands many of your parts on your car ARE IMPORTED to begin with.... which money is going to somewhere else, not america to recieve the parts....we pay for them to import em.

Quote:

like said above the parts we import from outside america, the profit goes to whichever country we import it from.

same goes for our stuff.... technically the mustang and corvette are found in england... limited cause of such a small country, but its in europe.....thats why its called TRADE... we get some of their stuff, we give some of ours....

as it stands most import labelled cars are made in america, at american plants, with american workers (aka more american jobs) and the only thing really import is the badge concept.......yup they make the badges here as well...

Someone spends there hard earned money , spends there time , and creates there own ideas on what they want , and if someone doesnt like it , they can label it "rice" . Thats b/s.

Rice is a food, and thats the only thing it should be used for. End of damn story.

totally agree.but usually people will resort to stereotyping words when their vocabulary is limited....

hence whyi direct the derogatory term equiivalent with a grain from the originating area of the world.

but like i said, i use it along the terms of more-or-less attitude--when it comes with the "poseur" attitude. the same ones that think adding a sticker gives 50 mental hp--which happen for all makes.

Hence, a car like, say Rodimus's, if he had that atitude would be "barley" or "corn". but i rarely ever say it anymore unless it's warranted.

Either way, i say be true to the concept you have for building up your ride. I.E i know Callisto ain't that fast (for being almost stock), and can't win any shows, but her major systems (knock on wood) are still in extremely good shape and highway-wise on road trips into the mountains, she gets exceptional gas mileage and go from 60-0 very quick to avoid hitting a 8-point elk on the highway at night

But i view those that slap a bodykit on their car, or a wing, or stickers for the *sole* intent of making people think their car is fast like the guys that stuff a pair of tubesocks down their underoos. You almost have to laugh at their inferiority complex.

Second of all Event, do you always have to make such HUGE posts, I have to grab my reading glasses and sit down in my chair with your posts printed up just to make sense of them.

And Finally...I'm going back to work now.

rice to me is ne car that the has the "rice package" as i like to call it and more. the rice package is....intake, fart can, a wing, and tail lights. really, what the hell is the use of putting a big ass park bench (wing if u like to call it that) on the back of a fwd car? it has not use, i think it looks terrible, it makes me want to crawl on smeones car and eat lunch on it or smething. and then u have all the gay stickers, fake hood scoops and roof scoops, cool NOS stickers, , and a big ass brow on ur windshield with a gay saying on it. the only thing i hate ne more is people buying 4 cly and putting the package on it once they get it and think they are kool as hell. and it all happened bc of THE FAST AND FURIOUS! i wish that movie would have never came out! speaking of which, new topic! does neone agree on the rice package with me?

Actually I disagree. I have an intake, wing, a windshield banner, neons, alteeza tail lights & stickers...is my car "rice"?

Most say it isn't. See the issue is not what you have on your car but how you put your car together. If your not cheap and spend good money on good products and plan things ahead instead of being a ebay or autozone/pepboys whore, people would actually come out with nice rides. Another issue is lack of knowledge. People build crappy cars cause they don't know any better. If you know nothing of cars except for what you see in a local store...that's what your going to get.

Also, people were modifying cars badly even before F & F but it got even worse afterwards cause people were comparing cars to that movie (which I hate).

disagree...

since when is an intake rice.... every car, or race car for that issue has some sort of intake, whether it feeds the turbo or supercharger, or naturally aspirated...

secondly, whats the difference between someone buying a 4 cyl and a 6 or 8 and doing the same thing? what it you do it on an 8 cylinder, its magically cool?

also , i disagree with the "it happened because of TFATF" crap.... TFATF brought it out mainstream, its been happening for years.

lastly, wings do have their function if you would take a step out of the "drag racing is the only style of racing anywhere" mindset. plenty of road course cars and autoX use wings... FWD CARS.....to help control stability....not just as speed, but especially the side dams of the wing in the turns....

some of the things you said is kinda like racism, not actually racism, but the concept of its use......

you hate stuff you dont know about and you grouped too many things together, some which add performance, mainly because thats what the majority buys.
