Jack : I was using canucks as a for instance... It didn't get mentioned on CNN nor Fox or whatever in the US. I'm not pulling that card as a flag waving attempt, it's to illustrate that the main-stream television media don't give a damn about the wider picture or the truth, just what news they can commodify and sell you.

And you wouldn't smack me but once and live to regret it

Oh good God!! A kilt wearing Irishman! Run! Do you play the pipes with the bellows on them then, the tradisional Irish "bagpipes"?

On a serioous note: I was watching TV last night and seeing the reports of the damage so far.. Oh my.. It's terrible. My condolences for those already lost, I imagine there will be more as time goes on. That is some of the worst damage I can rememeber seeing in my lifetime. I feel for those who were caught in the path. The reports of people trapped in attics etc. just terrible.

That storm must have packed a bigger punch than I thought as they say it will still be a tropical depression by the time it gets here sometime tonight. That was a whopper when it came on-shore.

You do have my sympathy, that is for sure.

it is a terrible shame, what happened, no question

and people will be there to help

but when asking for the worlds help, ask the same of the stock brokers, who are jacking the price of gas, in the time of emergency

talk to dubya, who has enough oil in reserve to help these people
and the insuracne companies that will raise you premiums to recoop their looses
( just like 9-11)
these people deserve worse, than some old person who looses his/her life because they can't/wont leave their house

the good people will always shine through and help with more than just money

and not to take shots at anyone or any country

but if you think bangeldesh, can fork over a billion in aid your nuts, they plain and simply don't have the money

Gas prices will go up due to the shut down of three refineries in the gulf coast not the greed of the stock broakers.

If I heard right one of the refineries was baddly damaged and will be down for a while, so get ready for $3.00 a gal for reg.

Oh but the stock brokers still have something to do with the cost of gas too ya know

Re: World cries out for help.....

Jack: maybe I'm weird, but I'd think that if the refinaries weren't in Tornado/Hurricane alley and some place a little less prone to natural disaster (like.. I dunno... Nevada) it might make this thing I like to call sense. Refinement can be done pretty much anywhere... assign the gulf depots as offloading only.

It's a bit revisionist, I realise, but the simple fact is that when nature so much as quiffe's in the Gulf of Mexico somehow that justifies a 10 cent per gallon (or 40 cent per litre.. go figure!) price jump. Once there's more refinement capacity, it'll drop the artificially high price of gas a good bit... and then... y'know.. you could pummel it into the ground by selling some of the strategic oil reserve's 700 million barrels. But what do I know

Wait a minute I have a question. If our oil comes from the gulf of Mexico why then does opec control what we pay for it? If were not buying from the arabs why do they control what we pay? Hmmm now that seems odd to me. That would be like Burger King
telling you a quater pounder at Micky D's will cost you $2.00. Why would B K be able to do that? Same for the oil market. Doesn't make much sence to me.

Well.. without breaking down a commodities market course into one post:
OPEC sets the price per barrell of an oil grade they will ask, for x amount of Barrells, and it's up to people to either buy at that price or negotiate a lower price. If one oil company decides to go higher or lower per grade, they will either have more or less sales, depending.

Basically, there are 2 grades of oil: Light Sweet (very easy to refine, but evaporates very easily) and heavy sour (much harder to refine, and has a high sulfur content).

Companies sell interest in their future oil production and contracts.

Basically, you can buy 7-8 million barrels (assuming you're trading in light sweet crude) at $70 per barrell, and turn it around after refinement processing costs get added in for a 3-4% profit.

The only way you're going to be able to keep your head above water is to buy into a few different oil companies.

Hugo Chavez offers US food and water because of Katrina

The only reason we're hearing about it is because of Hugo being in the news thanks to Robertson.

AGuSTiN, would that be the horrible dictator that the US "should take out" ? Wow I just wonder if Pat Robertson likes his crow cooked or raw. What an ass.

And thank you for finding something that shows the whole world doesn't suck.

Yeah, Robertson is an ass.

I'm not going to sing Hugo's praises, cause I don't know all about everything that is going on. I do know (and it's mentioned in the story at the end) that Hugo has proposed giving the poor people of the US discounted gas through Citgo gas stations.

Whatever his pitfalls, he's obviously not entirely evil <-US Governments opinion.

Yea where's Pat Robertson's contribution...sending bibles?

I find it rather disturbing that the National guard is spread so thin in rescue that it cant stop the looting, maybe if we had troops here, defending THIS COUNTRY it wouldnt be an issue. America needs to protect itself first and the world second
