I used to be a Scene of Crime Officer with the RCMP. I specialise in Latent print development and photography. I'd usually get to a place where something happened, and it wasn't unsual to find a media for a print as blood, or other bodily fluids.

I'm working primarily in AFIS now, since I'm not a Police officer and my job was re-classified for regular members, it's the career path with the most longevity (I'd never get past the physical assessment, I have osteo-arthritis).

lol... No, I haven't lost my job per se. I've always had to do AFIS work, but I preferred on the scene type-stuff... I was a CSI geek, and I know about the work first hand (and the smell is just one thing, try decomposition at 2 weeks, or giving a coroner a hand by picking up detached limbs and other viscera ), but I really liked the money, now I'm back to base salary, and while not bad, I'd like the boost from SOC work (about 3X the amount of normal salary).

Anyhow... I'm doing desk work for now, until someone changes the rules (again) and hoepfully makes it possible for me to do SOC work again. There's also the possibility that I'll get pushed out indefinitely if they decide to make my current job something that a Officer can do (they can't do the same work at the same rate...). If that happens I'm toast.

.lol i hate to say it but i know exactly what your sayin we bring the patients to the morgue after they expire. the worst i have come into contact is a patient being burned alive the smell was indescribable. luckily i am a supervisor now and send my people to do that stuff lol

baD STORY dont read for the weak .........................................

i was at work one day , and we were asked to do a transport to endoscopy, from the er. well er usually has there own transport but they were short staffed. so we graciously agreed. i get to the unit and ask if the patient was ready they said they sure are. i go to the room before i get to the room i get this horrible whiff of a retched smell i cant quite put my finger on it as i get closer to the room it gets stronger and i say "jesus i hope thats not my patient " now let me tell you er to endo is on the same floor not even 200 feet from eachother they could of done this rather easily but they didnt want to i know why as soon as i get into the room i pull back the curtain to see fecal matter covering the flood mixed with mass amounts of blood. there is no bed in the room just a man sitting in a wheelchair and a commode in the middle of the room he is in the back the floor is covered i instantly run to the nearest sink and vomit !!! not just a liquid vomit but a full fledge flu season you were makin out with your flu stricken girlfriend vomit it was horrible they had to send me home for the rest of the day cause all i could smell was that feces and i would start to dry heave .... lol

Yeah... A little trick I learned with that: I always, ALWAYS have a bottle of REALEMON in the fridge for when I did a decomp or similar Scene with nastiness. Shower first with your regular shampoo and soap, then, turn off the shower, take the REALEMON and wash your hair, behind your ears, your nostrils, any facial hair... really damned well, rinse, and then go at the rest of your body with it.

When you have the really nasty smells that seem to stick to you, its air-born fats and sugars that attach to the hair and sebacious (it skin lubrication) ducts... Unless you want to spend about $300 for the enzymatic wash that strips all the moisture out of your skin for about 4-5 hours, using lemons will do almost the same thing, it'll break the bonds between the airborn stuff and your hair/skin.

Seriously though, I know what you're talking about.. My first death scene was when an old man died and voided (ie, pooped, and pissed himself) on his mattress... The smell was an interesting bouquet of rotting meat, @!#$, piss, blood and ocular vitreous. Needless to say, I learned to go to a scene on an empty stomach. If I went to one now, I might be affected by it, but not very much. In a year or so, I wouldn't make any bets.

As for the actual topic: I've heard of an SOC officer that got syphillus because his tyvek suit was ripped at the knee and his knee was cut before he knelt into a puddle of blood. Blood to Blood transfer... He's alright, but he's not on SOC detail anymore.
