How about this one?
Wednesday, November 16, 2005 11:22 AM on j-body.org
Anyone have any idea about how to deal with the influx of newbs making inappropriate posts in (pretty much all) forums?

I would say, a minimum 4 week cap on replies, and only post new topics after being reviewed by a moderator or another designate.

Other ideas.

make it a pay only site.

There will be far less stupid replies that could get them in trouble so they wont lose their money. If they join at all.

Isn't this common place in all forums though? This one isn't that bad, I've seen way worse in gaming forums.

I wouldn't limit their posts, but if I were to do anything it would be to do a keyword match system in the posting function. I've always wondered why forums don't already do this...

For example..

If someone typed in "secret cam" into the post box, it would come back and say "Are you sure the Secret Cam Sticky didn't already cover your question?", and then offer you a chance to post anyway (maybe the sticky didn't cover it).

There are a variety of phrases that could be matched that have been asked a billion times...including but not limited to..

"Best sounding exhaust"
"what size pipe"
"H.O. manifold"

etc etc etc...

The best way to handle this situation is to add more moderators. Once more moderators are in place give them a specific area that they are responsible for. The problem with this is that it then becomes more like a job and less fun. I am a paid moderator for one of the largest moderation companies on the internet short of paying someone to moderate the board that is the best solution I can come up with.

Keeper: If only you could make a standard test...it would work perfectly, like having a test on using the "search" button

Jbody: That would be nice...but I have no way of paying for the premium membership, and if you would start charging then you would stop a lot of members from joining in the discussion.

Glace: Holy @!#$ yes...gaming forums are the worst out there, nintedo's forums are god awful, people joining and within one month have over 2000 posts...most are 2-5 words max, its really bad.

GAM: Your idea is really good, putting a time frame where they can only look and read what other people have posted

I think a combination of all the ideas is good for the forum

I've been a volentary mod and I agree, it should be a payed position

Pay only site is no good as many with good observation / opinions will be lost.

For example I will not pay to be a forum member on any website. I pay one membership fee for a club, and that includes forum access (the forum is free but has "member only" areas), but it is a club that involves meeting real people etc.

An ignore feature may be in order.

Hahahaha: Apparently there is a forum upgrade that is going to have an "ignore" or Squelch feature. However, last I read on that from Dave.org was about 6 months ago if memory serves. Also, we're supposed to have an Edit feature soon... but when that is, again, only his Daveness knows.

I agree that pay-only is a bad way to go, and it would severely detract from the overall content (except for the Vs. forum.. I think that would be a good idea to make Premium Only).

I figure limiting a newb to like 5 posts per day for the first 30 days is a good idea because they have to make those posts COUNT. Maybe also it could be an idea to force them to see an intermediary screen with a "Did you search first?" reminder, and moving the OK/Cancel/Search buttons.

Just a thought.

Limiting a NOOB isnt going to do anything all they will do is create multiple names and create more issues. The only real way to prevent the things you guys are talking about is an effective and consistant moderation team.

Mike: That's like asking for a car that makes over 400 HP& TQ, but also getting 45 MPG.

Wishful thinking.

It is a challange I will give you that. In our case on this board its more like wanting that car for free. Unless the JBO was turned into a Pay site there really isnt a way to pay the moderators. Also they would have to come up with a standard for moderating that is consistant and apply it consistantly without bias.
Re: How about this one?

To be honest, I don't think more moderation is the answer. There's enough control in our lives, we don't need any here. More mods doesn't mean less noobs posts, in fact, it might mean more since if a thread is locked/deleted, the noob will just make another one. The cycle will then continue until the noob is banned and that doesn't help anybody. The noob just wants to learn and that's the point of this forum. We just need to point them in the right direction in a FRIENDLY AND COURTEOUS manner and they'll learn for themselves.

I personally love the internet because it's a way to bring all differnt types of people together, even if that means there's "stupid" people in the mix. You can always learn stuff from everyone, whether it's the good ideas of "smarter" people or the the mistakes off the "stupid".

I say leave it the way it is.

1 - if they create multiple names, they get banned. plain and simple.
2 - if there were MORE moderation, y'all would bitch even more.

I( think what we need to do is have most of the people here on the same page in the first place. Not only in that Dave defines the rules, as in the TOS, but the mods follow them 100%, and are in the same understanding as Dave is (i.e. Dave and the mods hypothetically can't expect people to post everything in the right forum the first time if Dave and the mods don't do it themselves)...

Further, i would say have mods specific to a forum, rather than "you're a mod on all forums". Not sure if that's done here or not, but generally, it should be done with the person(s) that Dave sees as the ones that uphold his vision of the specific forum well (i.e. why have someone who's going for all show mod anything but show?). Further, have mods that believe in the cause, not freinds of the owner.

Again, i'm not speculating on whether these are done here or not, just pointing this out.

Making it a pay-only site would defeat the purpose of this being one of, if not the, single best repository for information regarding the J-platform.

And lastly, i think up to the users...if there's some dweebie that is annoying, ignore them.

i just mean if you think they are annoying, just don't read their posts...

or read them with a sense of comedy, like you're watching something like Conan the Destroyer--something to laugh at it's sheer ineptness

There is nothing you can do. The fact is, we were all once newbs here...did we all act the same? No. Did we all go and make pointless posts? No. Did we all go and flame people? No.

Fact is you can't generalize people as a group. There are plenty of new people who are here who respect the rules, who read and don't post or are knowledgable people who are new to the forums who have some insight to what's going on.

GAM, you would be devistated if the Playboy channel restricted how many times you could order them a week LOL

We just need to be able to filter out the dumbasses, they would be able to post, but
nobody but the newb poster could see their worthless test. Eventually after getting zero
reaction, they'll chill the @!#$ out, and post accordingly.

True, but were there morons then that made it a headache for people that stuck around? yes.

Again, true, but there are enough of the other type that make it a real PITA if you've been around or are a responsible netizen...
