Talk to someone who built their PC. Most that I have talked to treasure their home built PCs as much as people who buy macs. BTW all my comps are named also;

Old rebuilt comp = Frankenstein
Home built comp = Golem
Area51m 5500 = Loki (like from stargate, the assgard)

My next project will be to build a Mac, all possible thanks to Intel based Macs. Thank you Macintosh. After that a vista based comp.

Mine are all named after characters from Manhunter/Red Dragon, Silence of the Lambs or Hannibal. Mine is always Hannibal.

Apple iMac line gets 64-bit Intel Core 2 Duo processors; pricing starts at $999; new 24-inch model starts @ $1999

Apple ups Mac mini speeds, all models now feature Core Duo processors, prices unchanged

That would be Intel that did that with the minis. They have announced the last of the previous generation and now only Core2 Duo will be available. Intel actually lowered the price slightly.

We build a very similar machine for the Windows market and they are quite afforable (unless you use enterprise level drives, or HW encrypted drives). They use all mobile parts so expect the same features as a notebook but at a reduced price (no integraded Display device).

The Core2Duo CPUs are being offered at lower priced in the desktop space as well.

That just keeps happening. I've been in the business for about 15 years and the trend has not changed. Moore's law and all that. New, faster, better, cheaper. That has always been the way.

Remember the days when people paid about $4000 for a 286? People actually expected to pay that for a base machine. Now $4000 would get you one kick butt machine, the average purchase is now under $1500 and is quite potent.

The mini's have the Core Duo not the Core 2 Duo.

Apple upgraded the chips instead of dropping prices.

Most machines we sell are sub $700 INCLUDING monitor.

We sell primarily to business, and I'm in Canada.

The minis will have the Core2 Duo because that's all Intel will offer shortly. Intel made the Core2 Duo less expensive than the CoreDuo. Again, Apple had no choice and saw a decrease in manufacturing cost.

Check again. Because you're wrong

Yes eventually they will drop the core duo, but they havnt yet.

The Core Duo in quantities of 1000 is less than their Core 2 Duo counterpart (makes sence there are alot more transistors on the Core2) When I say counterpart I mean the mobile counterpart (the core duo is marketed as a laptop chip by intel) you are probably thinking of the E Series Core 2 Duos wich are not socket compatible wioth the chips in the mini, if Apple went to Core2 for the mini they would either have to refab it or go with the Mobile Version (T Series) wich IS NOT CHEAPER.

The Core Duo and Core Solo (aka Pentium M) are still being manufactured by intel; @!#$ they are still making the Pentium 4 and Pentium D.

Also; Even if they stopped selling them today Apple could still buy them, they have a "special" relationship with intel. If you remember they had the Core Duos before any PC manufacture did.

I think you are totally missing it... all apple did with the mini is stop selling the core solo model and essentially dropped their price $100 on the core duo 1.66, and then released a Core Duo 1.86 model at the same price that the 1.66 was.

The Core Solo is also intels current ULV chip.. Its gonna be a while before they are phased out.

Apple’s Mac OS X and Safari gain share, Firefox slips

Wednesday, February 21, 2007 - 06:28 PM EST

"Mozilla Corp.'s Firefox browser lost market share last month, Web metrics company Net Applications reported Wednesday. But Apple Inc.'s Safari continued to gain ground, an indicator of a slow but sure uptick in Macintosh sales," Gregg Keizer reports for Computerworld.

Keizer reports, "In January, Firefox accounted for 13.7 percent of the browser usage market, Aliso Viejo, Ca.-based Net Applications said, down slightly from 14 percent the month before. The dip was the first since May 2006. Since then, Firefox's share has risen continually month to month."

Keizer reports, "More conspicuous than Firefox's slip, however, has been Safari's steady march. The Apple browser, which is based in part on the open-source Konqueror, boosted its share to 4.7 percent in January from 4.2 percent in December. A year ago, Safari held 3.1 percent of the browser market. 'The more interesting trend is on the Safari side,' said Vizzaccaro. 'It looks like it's taking share away from browsers in the Windows environment.'"

"Net Applications, which also tracks Web users' operating systems, said that the increase in Safari's share has been matched move for move by a climb in Mac OS X use. In January, the combined PowerPC- and Intel-based Mac OS X share was 6.2 percent, up from December's 5.7 percent. 'Both Safari and Mac OS X are heading in the same direction -- up,' Vizzaccaro said," Keizer reports.

Great, it's now a full 1/3 of the browser market of Firefox, and it's hardware and OS dependant.

Way to go MAC CAMP!

Until you can make Safari work like MSIE, and be as secure as Opera/Firefox, it won't be gaining a whole lot more share.

I assume you mean like IE 6, since IE 7 is crap IMO, its too slow(not unlike firefox). All it is is an attempt to be like firefox(probably less secure than firefox - by default). I never really thought of IE 6 as a good performing browser... until I tried others.

IE7 if far more secure than Firefox, sand boxed as well.

MS security flaws are on the decrease while the flaws exploited in OS X keep rising...

The "other" side can keep living in their mythical security bubble if they want, but people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.

I should qualify that. IE& in the environment it was designed for (Vista) is more secure.

It is in "sand box" mode. That means no code can write anything without user confirmation, it runs in its own virtual space and has no access to the HAL. Even if a virus does run, it can't do anything. That is provided nobody has circumvented Vista's user and security settings. If you re-enable the Administrator account and log in as it, or turn off protected mode, too bad for you.

Again, this goes back to the OS dependency.

IE 7 in XP: bad idea. Especially if you don't know how to harden an XP system.
FF/Mozilla or Opera: better, but still nigh useless if you don't know how to harden an XP system.

Now if they could just excise the DRM idiocy and phone home "features" out of Vista, I'd be tempted to use it.

Alright, I've been using OS X for a couple of days now, and as much of a Windows user as I am, I'm not sure what to think.

I'm actually liking OS X (even though it's not quite working perfectly), especially the .dmg files. Installing stuff is great on OS X.

But, I'm wondering if it's because it's a novelty and I'm bored with Windows, or if I actually prefer OS X.

I still am not really a fan of "Macs" if you're talking strictly the hardware, because I still think it's over-priced and you don't get as many options hardware-wise with one (can't get my 7800 GT's to run in SLi, and if I try, all I get is a blank screen).

However, the OS itself isn't that bad. Although until I figured out how to disable it, the font smoothing was giving me a headache...

Some new stats... Apple Mac coming your way.

Net Applications' "Market Share" stats September 2006 - September 2007:
(Month: non-Intel Macs + Intel-powered Macs = total Mac market share)
09/06: 3.88% + 0.84% = 4.72%
10/06: 4.09% + 1.12% = 5.21%
11/06: 4.10% + 1.29% = 5.39%
12/06: 4.15% + 1.52% = 5.67%
01/07: 4.34% + 1.88% = 6.22%
02/07: 4.29% + 2.09% = 6.38%
03/07: 3.94% + 2.14% = 6.08%
04/07: 3.89% + 2.32% = 6.21%

08/07: 3.33% + 2.82% = 6.15%
09/07: 3.38% + 3.23% = 6.61%

In September 2006, Net Application's reported Safari share was 3.53%, so Apple Safari share has risen 44% year-over-year.

Net Applications' Web Browser "Market Share" stats September 2006 - September 2007:
