Damn dude you are WAY too passionate about this... its always the Mac users that love to hate PC's

I've used a PC all my life and I know nothing else... and personally I dont care! This thing works well enough for me (internet, school, games, saving data) and I dont really care if the Mac is God's greatest gift or not. Yeah I have to deal with the "Blue Screen of Death" every once and awhile and Bill Gates is a rich douche... but again as long as I can type on this thing, I Dont really care!

Until my petition to change the name of this forum the 'War Forum' to the 'Dick Measuring Contest' forum gets finalized, let's try and stick with cogent arguments and avoid the non-constructive bickering...

Judging from your posts, it seems like you hate them, and windows... I was directing that comment at the Mac users who love to preach how theirs is so much better... put one of those in front of 80-90% of Americans and they'd be like WTF? I used an Apple one time, but that was back i nthe 90's and I played oregon trail on it...

the problem with that, is that you are constenly upgrading to stay up with the newest games, and probly always will. yet at least to my knowledge thats not a possibilty with mac (videocards, processors, mobo, ram (u guys probly can do this one), gaming peripherals (gameing wheels, pads, gaming keyboards, and mice).

i would rather upgrade few pieces at a time over a never ending life of my machine, rather than retire/sell my machine to buy a whole new box (a very expensive buy based on the power you would need in your mac to play all the next gen games)

and before this computer, i had a win95 os. that was fine too

i've never reformatted because i've never had too, i run ad-ware once in every great while and everything works fine for me even after d'loading music from kazaa

as long as the PC user is cognizant about the everyday threats to their Windows-based computer, they shouldn't have a problem. with a decent hardware/software firewall, web browser (yes, I've switched from IE to FireFox), and anti-virus, and not surf porn sites all day, they don't need to run spyware and anti-virus scans after every session. I don't, and I don't need to. I could run a spyware scan on my computer right now, and all I would come up with are b.s. cookies that are easily taken care of.
PC > Mac as far as games are concerned, and it's going to be this way for a LONG time, until someone out there develops a rock-solid emulator for the Mac. with 90% of the world running PC's, game developers are not worried about MAC users, and don't need to be.
Mac > PC on massive data programs, because of it's RISC-based architecture. until Intel and AMD decide to go with RISC-based processors, PC's will not be able to compete with Mac on this. however, the odds of that happening are slim and none, due to the OS's that are written for x86 platforms are not RISC compliant, unless emulated. since you have to run an emulator to get your MS OS to run on a Mac, you're going to see a performance decrease, as compared to not running it.
PC > Mac on overall availability of diverse programs. but this just goes back to 90% of the world owning PC's. if Mac would have a more user friend GUI, you could see a slight shift in this. again, I doubt this is going to happen, because people are more comfortable with PC's, and companies aren't going to fork out the cash for a massive migration, in hopes that their proprietary programs will work on the Mac.

To be totally protected, and fully safe, you should run all your antispyware scans, and your antivirus scan after each session. <- (period)

it still wouldnt take me 20 minutes a day
it would take me 2 minutes a day, tops

i'll keep playing with my Macs...you boys go back to slapping each others' pen0rs now.

I'll give you an example of my PC and Mac experience.

My home PC is an Intel Pentium D 3.39 Ghz (Dual Core). I currently have 2 Gigs of RAM, but if I get another MOBO, I'll have 3 Gigs dropped in. My Vid Card is an ATI Radeon 256 MB AGP card. 300 GB HDD. With the 19" monitor, it cost me around $1,500.

My work Mac is a Power Mac G5, 2 x 2.3 Ghz Dual processors, 1 GB of RAM, GeForce 6600 Vid Card with 256 MB. 250 GB HDD. No monitor included, MSRP is $ 2,500.

That alone should be enough said. For $1,000 less I got an adequate computer. The $1,000 that went to the Mac bought you !!!ONE!!!! 2.3 Ghz processor. That's what average joe is looking at when he buys a computer.

But wait, there's more if you want to get technical.

At home, I will multitask the hell out of my XP machine. I'll run Adobe Photoshop, Macromedia Freehand, JASC Paint Shop Pro, and sometimes even MS paint all at once, copying to the clipboard, saving, switching software and pasting and opening. Never hangs, never slows, never misses a beat. I can maximize all of my windows, and everything that I'm working on for a specific piece of software is maintained in that window. I can't accidentally "click through" the program and open something on my desktop and lag my machine. I can click the taskbar at the bottom and switch with no problem between all the software I'm running

At work, I'll run the same software or their equivalents. (actually, JASC PSP, or now, Corel PSP, an awesome imaging software that rivals Photoshop isn't even being made for Mac). Now, working with the Mac is a challenge. I'll open Photoshop, I'll open Freehand, and I'll open, let's say, Quark Express. (apparently, I'm making a book or something....porno mag.) The machine slows, the little gay pride rainbow wheel spins around all the time. It just doesn't move. I try to get to the dock to get to another program that's running...

That, and the dock keeps popping up when I don't want to. At first, I was trying to scroll down, left or right, and DOCK pops up and all of a sudden I'm emptying the trash. I moved the dock to the left. Next thing you know, I'm reaching for my freeform shape tool, and here comes the dock, sneaking under my mouse from off the screen, clicking and opening something that will further lag the machine.

When it boils down to it, I don't have time or need or want to deal with the complexities of a Mac. That's what average joe thinks about. And don't think that you can say that a Mac is more stable than an XP machine, because they're not, I have crashed/locked/seized/punched that Mac many times. I don't think XP is more stable, but I have had less problems with it.

A computer, for me, is not about the money is costs; rather the time it saves. It takes my XP computer less time to boot and shut down than it takes the Power Mac G5 to boot Mac OS and ...that's it, just boot. On my XP machine, Adope Photoshop 7 opens in about 4 seconds flat. On the Power Mac, it takes about 12 seconds give or take. That is a LOOONG time and a BIIIIG difference.

Macs seem like they are horrendously overpriced for the actual components. I think that Apple uses 1 manufacturer for their parts (Asus? I'm probably wrong), which means that their prices reflect their suppliers prices. (this isn't an economics discussion. let's just say that because there is no competition for Mac parts, there is no innovation, and the prices remain constant. of course, I could be wrong, but that's just a guess that's way out of my focus).

Now, I'm not saying that I wouldn't buy a Mac, I was actually scoping for a Laptop by Apple. But, as a consumer reports statement once said, XX% of people asked why they bought apple products stated appearance as their number one reason.

IMHO, XP > Mac OS, but I just want a cool laptop.

$599 for the mini, and $1299 for the 17" lcd imac

Mac OSX's GUI is untouchable imo. 10x easier, and 10x more fun to use.

Why dont you disable your dock from moving? or just move it out of the way?

When 'Joe' realizes that they really wont have to 'deal' with transistitioning but embrace and love it 'Joe' will understand.

Mac OSX is what Jesus would use.

A PC properly taken care of and run by a competant user will kick ass

So will a MAC

A PC run by someone that makes plenty of ID-10-T errors will go down more often than a Homeland Security Official in front of a 14 year old girl
<interlude>
Somewhere, in the back of my mind, I think i stepped over a line--all in the relentless pursuit of good taste, of course)
</interlude>

So will a Mac

So will a system running any flavor of Unix.

Basically, pick your poison.

I don't really understand the argument here. Even though OSX is now Intel, we're STILL talking apples and oranges.

I like OSX. I like having the unix shell and all my utilities. The GUI is sweet. The hardware has MANY little touches to it. You're constantly suprised of the engineering that went into it, often solving problems you didn't know you had, before you have them. Transfering your data, settings and apps to one Mac to another is as simple as a firewire cable and holding a key down during boot. The power bricks have a place to wrap your power cable. It just goes on and on and on...

I run XP at home because I'm a gamer. I also have *paid* for copies of Photoshop, Sony Vegas, and all my games. I do lots of video editing and you just can't buy the horsepower my PC has on a Mac, period.

Cue Dick Waving --- Dual Core 4800+ Athlons, 4 gigs of RAM, four 10K Raptors in striped RAID, DVDRW, Geforce 7800GT, 400 gig Western Dig for backups... and two 2800's w/ 2 gigs of RAM machines as video processing slaves.

At work. I run Linux (specifically Kubuntu). Better for programming Perl... FTP, SSH, integrated into the file manager seemlessly, making remote locations appear as if they were local, file previews and all..... I can go on and on but most of you wouldn't recognize the tools I love.

Fact is... different tools for different jobs. So where's the beef?

^^^exactly. If i was going to do music editing, i'd likely get a Mac.

If i was going to do CAD (like at work, definitly an XP box)

If i was going to do science and programming, definitly unix.

pick your poison.

Either way, i feel sorry for Apple. Why use Intel chips when they could have gone AMD...

Work: PC's for end users, we use SUN servers for running the AFIS database queries and pattern rec software.

We don't use Mac's except for the brand protection dept... and even then... that's one department out of 70 or so, or like 4 Nodes out of about 3500.

They're fine and dandy, but, they're not cost-effective enough to make them useful for the business world at large. PC's are readily upgradeable, and cheap to service, and it doesn't take an APPLE CERTIFIED Service Provider to upgrade your unit (quite literally, you remove the HDD, RAM and vid card and transplant it into a new husk. the rest gets sent back to apple and ends up going to landfill). Also there's a lot more flexibility in a PC simply because it's market share is huge.

OS's are your choice, there are hacks for OSX -> PC, and Hacks for XP -> Mac, Unix will adapt for either... it comes down to what you want to spend, and if you give a damn what it looks like. Personally, I think money looks best on a bank statement, and as long as it works and is quiet, I can live with it.

Unless you're a real Comp.Eng Nerd, you're not going to give a damn about why Little Endian vs. Big Endian makes programming in assembler a little easier, nor are you really going to get into how Motorola 88000 Assembler is a little more sane than Intel Assembler... But in the end, I re-iterate my previous point: Money and looks is what it all boils down to.
