I've got one of the 1.9L engines in my '85 Lynx. While this is the carburated version with the EXP's and Escort GT's getting a HO fuel injected 1.9L it's still pretty much the same motors. When I got divorced a little over two years ago I left with the shirt on my back and picked up the Lynx for $500. I'm truly amazed at how well these engines hold up. I've driven the piss out of it for two years and don't see anything changing. I'll sell the '99 Cavalier before I get rid of the '85 Lynx, and I promise you it will outlive it the Cav anyway. Steel bumpers, no sensors, two vacuum lines (one for the spark advance and one for the brake booster, no emissions controls on the car), and a simple 3spd automatic that has the fluid changed every year.

If you asking about the ability to handle power, Mitsubishi's 4G63 (2.0L DOHC) should be mentioned. No, I don't work for Mitsubishi, I've just owned a few DSM's before I got my Sunfire. Otherwise, I've had good luck on my 2.2 OHV.

In 11 years of owning DSMs I have yet to see a case of crank walk. I have read about it. In Club DSM I remember one guy from the East coast and one Guy from Toronto being sticken by it. I have had a 2G (7 bolt) for 9 years and run the crap out of it. It has about 180 000km on it now and still no sign of the problem.

Those who understand the 4G63T (7 bolt, the one the "walks") also know the problem is just not all that common. Anyone who used good oil and keeps it clean and fresh will not likely have any issues at all. That's the trick to getting long life out of any engine, but especially the 4G63T. Good oil, frequent changes.

Now shut up about the virtually non-existant issue of "crank walk"
