i received this pamphlet today near my job. a couple people were walking down the street trying to get signatures on a petition for these people to be put on the ballet for the presidential election. that's all i really have to say about it. i don't have a scanner so i will type up the pamplet word for word (complete with any spelling/grammatical/etc mistakes)

Party for Socialism and Liberation Candidates Gloria La Riva and Eugene Puryear Stand for:

U.S OUT OF IRAQ

SOCIALISM

End the rule of the billionaires, bankers and militarists-fight for workers' democracy.
We need a sustainable economy based on meeting people's needs, not making the rich richer.
We need socialism!

UNLIKE the corporate-funded candidates who say the way in Iraq will end "some day" in the distant future, Gloria La Riva and Eugene Puryear, running on the presidential ticket of the Party for Socialism and Liberation (PSL), have been building a movement of millions of people to demand the U.S. out of Iraq NOW! They have helped organize the biggest demonstrations against the Iraq war in the last few years.

This is a rich man's war. It is a war to dominate the oil-rich Middle East. Only the banks, corporations and oil monopolies benefit. It is the sons and daughters of the working class who are sent to kill and be killed. Those who started this war and continue to fund it should stand trial for crimes against the people.

Bush gets a pass every day from the two-faces Democrats in Congress even though he is responsible for send hundreds of thousands of Iraqis to their graves with tens of thousands of U.S. troops also killed or horribly maimed.

The politicians and corporate bosses have a message for working people: salute the flag, stop thinking and send our loved ones to fight in imperialist wars. They proclaim we "are one nation" when they want to drag workers into the next war.

But these same capitalists and political opportunists will turn around and shut down factories, lay off tens of thousands of workers and slash health care benefits and pensions if they believe it will add to the super-profits for the corporate elites and bankers.

In the last 20 years, unions have been attacked by the bosses, industries shut down and workers' wages have plummeted. The cost of living has skyrocketed while wages and income have dropped. Landlords, banks and real-estate speculators have turned cities and towns into places where it is impossible to live, with rent and the cost of buying a house beyong the reach of more and more people.

What can change this situation? If we look back at the history of the United States, it is when the people, both workers and the poor, joined together to fight injustice and abuse, that real change has come about.

The bosses and politicians try to whip up racism as a way to keep the working class divided. The divide-and-conquer tactic has been used since the founding of this country. Slavery, the genocide against the original peoples of the Americas, brutal colonialism and the super-expolitation of immigrant labor was the source of wealth for the white, racist capitalist ruling class in the United States.

The only way the could keep their power, their fortunes and incredible privilege is to get one set of workers fighting another. This is the historic function of racism as a key element of growth of modern day capitalism in the United States. The use of racism as a key divid-and-conquer strategy explains the virulent attack on immigrants and immigrant rights.

Although the civil rights movement ended legal apartheid in the U.S., racism today is just as vicious as ever. The La Riva/Puryear campaign is part of a larger struggle to unite all workers against our real enemies.

The African American community and other people of color won rights throught the great civil rights movement. Workers and the unemployed, who organized and struggles for the right to a union, and better wages and working conditions, won social security, unemployment benefits and other social programs in the 1930s. Women and lesbian/gay/transgender people achieved great gains through struggle.

But these changes can be rolled back as the bosses go on the offensive to increase profits and increase exploitation.

Every person in this country could have the right to free education, free healthcare, affordable housing and a decent paying job with full benefits. But to realize these simple demands will require a true revolution.

The Part for Socialism and Liberation is a working-class party organized by and for working people. We are socialists active in every struggle the affects working and poor people at home and abroad. We believe that an organized and militant people's movement can achieve great changes-necessary changes-that improve the lives of working and oppressed people.

As socialists, we fight for a different kind of society. We fight for a society where people's needs are no longer a commodity to be sold to the highest bidder. We fight for a society where housing, healthcare, education and a job are a right. We fight for socialism.

The PSL is running candidates in 2008: Gloria La Riva for president and Eugene Puryear for vice president and local candidates in several states.

Get involved in a campaign that puts people first, not profits. Contact us to find out more.

The pamphlet then goes on to tell what else their candidates have done in the past as well as contact details and even a little cut-out if you'd like to donate/volunteer. Please-discuss.

It's a pseudo-socialist league flyer.

Same BS (just piled higher and deeper) as most political promises from every other candidate in history.

That was funny how wrong it was. It seems they do need a better education to understand how the country works and how it was found and built. Oh how funny those silly socialists are. Why don't they just move to China or Venezuela if they want socialism oh wait could it be because it is failing there and everywhere else.

Uh... we're socialists? We have socialized health care but that's all I can think of off the top of my head. Socialism works horribly as an economical doctrine. However, as a health care program it's good. Well regulated capitalism is the best way to run a large country.

We have a hybrid of the socialist economical model with captialist goals.

If you want to call that well regulated, then cool, but we're still low on the list of countries that hold corporations responsible for their tax burden: In Canada less than 11 cents of every tax dollar collected comes from corporations, if that was 15 cents of every dollar, we could get rid of the GST, drop PST to 3% across the board (except for Alberta... buggers), and income taxes would be about 22% instead of 30%.

It would affect the bottom line of most companies in a negligible fashion, and keep demand high for product.

A good idea that gets whined down every stinking time it's brought up.

I just read this again, and it's a really funny read. I mean, it's as if it was written by children with no understanding of the big bad world.

My favorite is the funky math. They want to employ everyone in the country, pay them 15$ an hour, pay all their schooling right up to college, give everyone free/cheap housing to boot AND they want full rights for illegal immigrants who, probably, are going to be jumping the fence in order to come get work and all those free perks. HOW DO THEY EXPECT TO PAY FOR ALL THIS???????

Another funny bit is giving reparations to African Americans for slavery, but not a word about giving back all the land stolen from the Native Americans. Guess the Natives don't get no love huh? Or maybe it's because they don't trust Indians to run the country in good socialist fashion. Guess they only help people likely to help them.

I dunno, maybe it's because I'm older now but I can't wrap my head around how people can't see through this stuff. It's so obviously flawed. This is as bad as the religious right's nonsense, except coming from the opposite direction.

Sweden does it, When referring to you first statement... AND it works quite well, they have a much better quality of life then you. They pay for all post secondary, they have FULL health care, Minimum wage is near an equivalent $15 an hour.

So really, in many respects, their idea's in some areas are solid, but I will agree in some others... well they just seem really off.

It can be done, but you have to penalize businesses that decide to cut and run with gigantic importation tariffs. You also have to make it work, and do it right.

Reparations to African Americans won't happen, ever. There is far too much time between the abolishment of slavery and today, basically 4-5 generations. On top of that, Slavery would have been a nice alternative to the crap that free Irish, Chinese and indentured servants had to live in: a lot less black servants got worked to death share-cropping over 200 years than did chinese/irish in 30 years of rail road building... but they were 'free,' so there's no money there.

Hell, look at the Native Indians for a second, and compare that to the Jews, Muslims, Gypsies and other undesirables slaughtered by the Nazis. 3 million and over 11 million... take your pick as to which numbers belong to what group.

Jews: 3 Million over 4 years.
Indians: 11.7 Million over 300 years.

Well, some of it works, some doesn't. The idea is that you really have to commit.

Nobody ever wants to think of the indentured servants that came over and were treated quite possibly worse that the slaves were. It is considered racist to suggest that a white (european american) ancestor had it worse than a person had it as bad a black (african american) ancestor. Thats one of the things I found quite amusing in Blazing Saddles. "We'll take the niggers and the chinks, but we dont want the Irish."

minimum wage to 15 an hour? that would put everyone out of business

free for all healthcare, never will happen, someone has to pick up the tab and that will be the taxpayer which will lower that 15 an hour salary quite a bit

Reparations? Sorry but you dont deserve a @!#$ red cent for being any color

the justice system isnt racist, minorities do the majority of crime, stop being thugs and theres not an issue, in fact if you clean up your act it might even get rid of the stereotype!

Yep give EVERYONE $15/hour and suddenly 15/hour isn't enough to live on.

reparations are stupid - I mean I can almost see paying former slaves(who are all dead BTW) except - wrong or not slavery was legal when it happened so they aren't legally entitled to payment. More importantly than that, why should people who have never picked cotton in their lives get paid for doing so. As I said, anyone deserving of this money is long dead. Also, just who would PAY for reparations? ALL TAXPAYERS is who. And even if you want to limit that to white people, only a small percentage of white people (aka rich white people) actually owned slaves. My family never owned any and I'm sure as hell not paying nor apologizing for something neither I nor even my ancestors had any part in.

Minorities may do the majority of the crime, but that comes down to financial classes rather than race. Class-ism has replaced racism in America as the REAL issue. Minorities on the average are poorer, and poor people tend to commit more crime on the average. This is the real reason that "Affirmative Action" - although I hate the policy based off its inherent racism - was a resounding economic success, Putting more money in the hands of people who have the least of it - and therefore are most likely to spend the greatest percentage of it - stimulated the economy. You don't build pyramids from the top down.

I've never heard of this "part throttle" before. Does it just bolt on?

Rod: Canadians pay (on average) about $6,700 a year per capita for varying levels of universal healthcare (but it's basically: Acute/Urgent/Palliative care, rehabilitation, in care medications and implements....Major care coverage... some devices like canes and crutches aren't covered, and most of the time prescription drugs aren't either), but it's over $12,000 for similar healthcare in the USA (*that's the part that comes from the Gov't). The other thing: every Canadian has healthcare all the time. At any one time in the US about 16% have no coverage and a further 20% haven't got enough coverage.

And, yeah, I hate to say it, minorities get on average longer prison terms for the same crimes pretty much across the board.

When I paid my own health care it cost me $5760 a year. That was for some damn good health care. Right now my employer covers all of my health care costs. If we went to a socialized health care I would not see one cent of what my employer pays and would also have to pay higher taxes to cover the health care costs. For me it would suck big time as I need every cent i get right now. 7.5 hours in a hospital (5.5 in ICU) cost me a whole $100, i cant complain.

I know enough people in other countries that have "free" health care and they all hate it. They end up paying a private doctor to actualy take care of what is wrong, because the public ones just dont care.
