1989 Suzuki Swift GTi

About This Vehicle:

Nope, not a Metro, look again. This car was built by Suzuki from 1989 to 1994. It was only called a "GTi" one year (1989) due to Volkswagen filing a trademark lawsuit against Suzuki, so mine is a bit of a collectors item. My car was a project car built by a well established Suzuki tuning company here in Southern California back in 1990 for Motor Trend Magazine, a delay in parts caused MT to go with a similar car built by Jackson Racing instead. This car did a brief stint on SCCA solo class. Then was moth balled for the past 14 years, it looks like it just came off the factory line yesterday and it's a 1989!! It's been a dream to own this exact car for me since i was 16. So when i saw this project was now for sale I jumped to buy it instantly. They finally decided to sell it to make space in the tuners already over crowded warehouse and because the car itself and the parts on it are now no longer in production it's lost it's value as a showcase car. Now it's an amazingly well persevered car showcasing a car from the birth of U.S. Sport Compact phenomenon, and awesome piece of Sport Compact history.

This car is far from a kick ass drag racer though, that's not the purpose of the Swift GTi/GT's they were meant to be extremely excellent performers with adequate power and agile 4-wheel independent handling (like a Mazda Miata with a hatch). This car however came with the full monte of go fast parts...although "still" not blazing fast, it's still the most fun damn little car you can own outside of a Honda CRX. and in the end isn't FUN what it's all about? I just recently broke the entire car down and rebuilt it and painted it gunmetal. And it is strictly a weekend track toy of mine as i AutoX in it pretty much every weekend.

  • One of the main reasons the Swift GTi/GT was not a huge sales success was the fact it was confused for a Geo Metro. They do in fact share the same body shell but nothing else the two cars couldn't be MORE different form each other. But the benefit was the Swift GTi/GT shared the ultra light body of the Geo Metro
