02 ls sport- eco engine and the best looking 3rd gen factory cavalier IMO

just buy whichever one you think looks the best. it you buy a pre 03 make sure it has either the 2.4 ld9 engine or the 2.2ecotec (came in some 02's) and id say youre set.

its a decent platform with a decent aftermarket that you can get into fairly cheap.

good luck with your buy.

In terms of reliability, the 2.2L OHV is the best of the 3 engines. The 98+ 2.2L OHV are the better ones, and no matter what, make sure it would have the 4 speed automatic, the 3 speed is a real dog.

A 2004 LS Sport... buy mine

Really though I love the 2002 LS Sports. IMO anything 2000+

The way i look at it..
get any year Cavalier 95-05 with a eco or quad4.

You can swap bumpers, fenders, hoods, tail lights, trunks, spoilers, dashes, seats, door panels, ect between all the models.

So you can really turn any year Cavalier into any style you want as long as you have the money, time and knowledge.

So if you strip the car down to the bare essentials its 90% the same throughout the years.

i've seen this so many times... im either gonna set it straight or put my foot in my mouth... lol

for starters... and i know info can be suspect especially on a discontinued car... all info i can find says 01 was the last year for the LD9, someone swapping one in a 02 is a different story.. but thats not my issue..
how do you figure a 00-02 Z is a stronger motor then a eco but the 99 is weaker then one? thats makes zero sense...

a LD9 is a LD9, thats the purpose of engine codes! lol.. they all make 150hp.. Minus the minor update midway thru 99 (which i own) that is the exact same motor in a 00-01... and even still, any version of the LD9 makes more power stock then the ecotec...

01 was not the last year the ld9 was offered. and there are minor differences in the ld9 in between those years, that's why he said there's a difference in the motors.

just like the difference's in between the ecotec from a cavalier and the ecotec in a cobalt, same 2.2 ecotec, but minor differences

Re: what is the best year of cavi to get?

yeah... i wasnt sure since i can find 02 cars with LD9's yet any list i can find says it was only offered up to 01..
the only change from 96-01(or 02) was the update in 99.. they cut the egr, raised compression by a tiny bit and switch from low to high impedance injectors.. power was maintained at 150 so i dont really consider that a factor in this.. all other variations of the quad 4 or any other name you want to call it are not LD9's... sure some might run things a bit different, but its the same motor..

I mean in terms of how it can handle added power, perhaps thats bang on... But the op didnt mention anything about modding the car so this discussion should be based on stock..

and he didnt say differences... he said stronger... and my point where my 99 motor is the same as a 00+ and either way, all 2.4's not matter the year make more power then the eco stock..

im not out to start anything, its really a trivial thing afterall. lol.. But like i said, i've seen this come up more then once and i believe its a mistake..

you forgot about the transmission

95 - midyear 99 = Isuzu trans
midyear 99 - midyear 02 = F23 Getrag Trans... you retain more power through the Getrag transmission.

ahh.. i have the 4t40e and havent really read up on the MT options... always wondered about the "isuzu tranny" i've heard about on here... figured it was swapped in, not factory...
learn somethin new everyday on here.. lol

all this talk of the three motors motors they put in cavaliers, im sure there was a little talked about 4th motor, that actually had the highest hp of all cavys (only by 5 hp but who's counting) the 95 2.3 might be a better bet than most give it credit for, it is the easiest to swap high output parts from earlier quads and make a quick street car, most may not agree but oem parts are often the most reliable and easiest to find parts, and dont usually require modification. the 95 2.3 is also the cheapest to tune but thats just my opinion. Every one likes what they like just write down a list of features u have to have, and things u dont like about certain years then go from there. Like someone else said, strip them all done to the underwear and they are all pretty much the same

if it can't win a race it better win a show

the 95 LO has the same cam issues as the ld9, due to the 95 lo having the CPS pad and the PS pump insert.

theres actually a 5th and 6th engine
the LB6 - 2.8 60 degree V6 - 130 Base Horsepower
and the LH0 - 3.1 60 degree v6 - 135 Base Horsepower

and a 7th and 8th
2.0 SOHC - 96 Base Horsepower
LT3 - 2.0 SOHC TURBO - 165 Base Horsepower

The LT3 was the fastest base J Engine.

well if we're gonna get all technical then the best specific one to get would be the 1997 Chevrolet Cavalier ZR-24 Moab

185hp @ 6250 180tq @ 5250

and the winner is.... ME

good luck ever finding one though...

meh, that looks to be modified by an aftermarket company, even if a small limited edition series came out, its still a modded LD9...

the best year was 2003 or 2004. I currently have a 2003 and I like the taillights. I seen most of the 2003's since I was a contract employee at the Lordstown assembly plant. in 2002 and 2003.

besides how the 03 + LSS sides were constructed, nothing impressed me with the 03+ redesign... the point in the front is god awful as is the trunk insert...

my vote remains on the 00 - 01 Z24 with 02 LSS lips.

Think about what you want out of the car & look at which style you prefer.... and keep in mind, they are basically like legos with eachother. Like stated above, everything is really interchangeable, even motors if you have the know-how/motivation... So if just one thing is deterring you from one of the phases of 3rd gens, you can probably swap it with the same part from a different phase.

An even taller Cavalier? for off-roading, lol.

Boosted ground clearance and 17-inch wheels wrapped with exotic Michelin Pilot rally radials help give the front-drive Moab the ability to venture off-road (particularly on hard-packed trails) with confidence and flair.
