J-body model abbreviations, what do they stand for?
Saturday, February 06, 2010 3:54 PM
ok i dont know how i thought of this but whatever.. i did.

i was thinking about what LS in 'ls sport' stood for today for some reason, then i got to thinking, well @!#$, i dont even know what the others stand for!

so... what does LS (as in ls sport and plain ls) Z (as in Z24), RS (rally sport?)

i couldnt think of any more, but i think there are a couple i missed.

VL = Value Leader
Z24 = Z24 (GM RPO Code)
RS = Rally Sport
LS = luxury sport
LT = luxury touring (However some CHEVY employees state that for the more modern (05 + ) vehicles, it is no longer an acronym, but just a trim level designation
****LS being lower trim level; LT being higher trim level ****

(i know we dont have an LT)

so for us, an LS Sport = Luxury Sport Sport ... how stupid is that?

i also know we dont have an SS but thats Super Sport.

second gens had a VL... there was never a badge, but the car information shows "VL Value Leader". Its the base base base model

canada had VLs aswell think 00+ had them, the were the BASEST cavalier you could buy no side skirts or moldings no AC tilt cruise NOTHING i think a steering wheel was the only option the VLs had

canada also never had a Luxury Sport Sport (stupid) whe had Z24 through every year till death

we also had a Z type but not sure if thats the same idea as the Z22 the Z types all had a little Z type badge on them

^ they actually Had the Base and then the VL, then the VL and VLX and the Z24 and Z-Type also. My VL has power windows, A/C, Power Mirrors and tilt. It didn't have Variable intermittent wipers until I put in the switch. That drove me up the wall.

Also the RS or 'rally sport' moniker is such a huge joke in regards to jbodies. Is it actually RALLY sport though, in most of Europe RS is (audi RS4) Renn Sport, meaning Motorsport. I think it's really just a couple letters in GM's Case (Camaro RS, can't see it doing well on a gravel special stage). Rs was a Ford thing in England when it meant Rally Sport and the XR was a play on Rally Cross and was a step down from the RS models

the Z22 on a jbody is a dealer badge... no J left the factory as a Z22... i dunno if the dealers thought that the Z24 = 2.4 motor (which is very very very incorrect) and slapped on a Z22 decal for the 2.2. Or if they really did some fuel economy modification

Ya the Z-whatever is in the code and the Factory realized that it sounded cool and started plastering the applicable part of the code that started in Z on the vehicle.

If you look up Z-71 in there (found on a lot of Chevy pickups) you'll see its an off road package, but in reality those trucks just have less firm shocks and thats it LOL I've always thought that was funny.

I was surprised that Z06 (as in the Corvette) shows as a interior luxury option, and not a performance one.

BTW you forgot GT wich stands for Grand Touring.

And yes RS stand for rally sport, people have called RS camaros Rally Sports since they came out although I agree that its nevver really made sense..

ah GT ... forgot about the Sunfire

while were at it, the Sunbird had an LE model.

Re: J-body model abbreviations, what do they stand for?
Sunday, February 07, 2010 7:24 PM
LE = Limited Edition I believe.

WIch also doesnt really make sense if you think about it.

My Sunfire is technically an LE (although it just says Sunfire on it) but was ordered with a LD9 and 5-speed, wick makes it a little rare.

Basically, Fully loaded LE trim package, but with the engine and tranny that came standard in the GT.

ive noticed more nonGT fires have 2.4s than non Z24 cavaliers... in the second gen world, most RS models had the 3.1 like the Z24, but a lot of third gen RS models have LN2s in them...

Re: J-body model abbreviations, what do they stand for?

I think it's funny the 3rd gen Cavs had RS. Was the RS a 2.4? No. It was the 2.2L OHV Coupled with the 3 speed auto, and it was purple. LE is usually the base model. I doubt it's Limited Edition, it's probably just a trim level, not an acronym. Same with LS, LT.

they weren't all purple. i've seen black, purple, green, white etc.

I thought GT was Gran Turismo like the GT part of GTO?

Sunbirds also had an SE model, when I owned mine I assumed it stood for special edition but I was never really sure. Here is mine, a 94 SE with the GT package which was the way it was ordered from the factory. Obviously I changed the wheels and painted it though!

I have never seen a Z24 that did not have a 2.4.

The second gen Z24 had a 3.1 V6 from 91-94 an a 2.8 V6 prior to 1991 and the 1995 Z24 has a 2.3 Quad 4 LO in it
