PORTING 2.2 HEAD Question
Thursday, September 08, 2005 12:36 AM
This may have been brought up before but I could not find it. I have another Head that I am going to build and Was wondering if anyone had grinded away that hump in the exhaust side and if its cool to go ahead and take them out. And yes I know about the whole VE thing I am boosted so Wanna go as big as possible.

Thanks

If you are talking about the "vanes" in the exhaust port, no do not grind them down. The vanes actually keep the exhaust velocity up, to better help scavage the exhaust out of the cylinder. Just smooth it out, with the sanding rolls and cross buffs, to reduce any losses from the texture of the metal.
If you are talking about the Valve Guide Bosses, yes you can reduce the size of them, but don't go to far, they still need to support the valve guide and valve.

actually, if you're boosted, go ahead and remove the humps in the exhaust port, they are there for exhaust scavenging on the n/a engine. Since you have forced induction exhaust scavenging is not a concern and you should have as big of ports as you possibly can.
