Underdrive Alt and Crank Pulleys for 2.4
Monday, February 14, 2005 6:32 AM
Would anyone here know what kind of gains can be seen from an Alternator Pulley, compared to a crank pulley? I picked up an AEM Alt pulley for my 2.4, and am curious how it compares to something like an Unorthodox crank pulley. Also, can they be used in combination without negative side effects?

with the alt pulley your going to make less power from the alt, so if you have a big stereo or something you might run into a problem. the alt pulley and crank pulley a different things, there going to give you different gains, you might see 5 hp from the crank pulley and 3 from the alt pulley, maybe... but theres only one way to find out, put the pulley on since you bought it and see if you gain anything.

if all you are going to put on is the alternater pulley you won't really notice any difference accept you lights going dimmer, but if you through on a crank pulley you can feel the car pull harder when accelerating. just my 2 cents

Yeah the crank pulley offers tha majority of the gain, I would say around 7ish hp for the crank 1-2 for the alternator. I did AEM alternator/ unorthodox crank just so it uses the stock belt and looks pretty too lol.

wouldn't an under drive pully be smaller? So if you replace your stock pully with a smaller one would'nt it spin faster?

You under drive the crank pulley yes, but the alternator pulley is larger. It does spin faster but I think that is mostly because the pulleys are much lighter(stock 4+lb crank) compared to a 14oz unorthodox.

If I change my crank pulley how much smaller of a belt am i going to need for it to fit? My motor is out of my car right now so I might as well change it while I am there. Can't do alt. pulley cause I am putting a stereo in my car.

It depends if you get unorthodox or the rk sport one, i belive one of them is a belt 2" shorter than stock but I`m not sure which. RSM does make an even lighter stock size pulley but I`m not sure if it will outperform an underdrive pulley.

Looks like I'll be doing botht eh Crank and Alt pulleys then, since I just run my radio stock. I'm all about power.
