As far as a walk through for 3rd gens there really isnt anything different then the 2nd gen except for maybe the ebrake but I havnt gone into that yet and I just plan to you the stock J cables Im sure I can make them work with the Neon Ebrake

is there anything you didnt do for the 3rd generation or was there any extra stuff you had to do?

Not a thing was different save for the fact that I just wiggled the stock J line into place on the caliper and used a threading adapter to thread it into the Caliper instead of going through the trouble of new brake lines, although thats not a bad idea for me was just a cost I didnt see as neccesary mostly cause it was still the metal line.

About the only differences between 2nd a 3rd gens would be the brake plumbing and e brake system. Everything else is the same.

If someone doing a 3rd gen gets the factory ebrake cables to work, that makes it that much easier. When I did it, I didn't want to go through testing and then find out it didn't work (which it may), besides, my ebrake cables were junk and needed to be replaced.

My setup is pretty extreme as far as plumbing and fabrication goes. I modified/replaced almost everything when I did it. NotsoOceanside has gotten it to work with minimal mods, and I don't see him having any problems with the ebrake system either.

so let me get this straight everything is working except for the parking brake?

i dont see a problem there meaning my cars a standard. and as long as i shove it into first it wont roll. so whats the deal?

unless your front wheels are lifted up and then the car will roll nicely. theive dont just break windows, they use other means as well. and what if your brakes should happen to go out while on the road? engine braking takes a big distance to slow down. An ebrake is a good thing to have just in case.

Re: Neon disc swap how to

As long as you dont park on a really steep hill where gravity overpowers the compression in the motor holding it still and it rolls then your fine putting it into first.

Its not that big a deal to go ebrakeless, If someones so determined to jack up your car to steal it having your ebrake on isnt going to stop them either.

As far as when you jack it up to work on it a brick or rock behind the wheel works just fine.

But in the end its not going to be that big a deal to get the stock ebrake cable to work just need to either crimp a new ball on the end to shorten it or poull it out of the mount a little further with a spacer of some sort

The e brake is required in most states ot pass safety inspection. I don't see why you wouldn't have one.....

true but since im in michigan where inspections need not apply its no rush for me to get it done my turbo needs my attention more for now. Ill make sure to update when i progress on the ebrake though

I got a couple of questions now that it's been done on the 2nd and 3rd gen.

1. Do you guys use an adapter and use the j-body brake line or the neon one?

2. Is the spacer absolutely necessary? If so how thick does it have to be?

3. Just to make sure:

NotsoOceansideEco: I'm in MI too. One (rare) thing you have to watch for, if you take the car in to some shop, and they notice it doesn't work. They can refuse to give you your car back until it's fixed. I've never had this problem, but it is the law.

Re: Neon disc swap how to

No shop save for a paint shop will ever touch my car, I know how 50% of people are when it comes to other peoples cars

1, for the 3rd gen I just used the stock brake line and a thread adapter I would tell you the sizes if I knew them I just brought them with me and tested till i found the right fitting.

2, Ive only gone down the road once so I cant be certian that the slight rub I have is still the brake pads or something else. I had to use washers on the caliper bolts because the thread wanted to go to far through and push the pad off the caliper locking everything up. I plan on pulling it all back off after 100 or so miles of driving with a few spirited brakes in between to see how everythings working out this may not be a problem with the other rotor spaced I dont know.

3, Correct

I knew you had to finish up your turbo stuff....I was talking to Shaun....sorry.

I used all custom stuff. See page one for links to hardware. This is the most decision making you have, since there are tons of ways to go about it.

J-kub wrote:2. Is the spacer absolutely necessary? If so how thick does it have to be?

Yes. The rotor will rub the backing plate/dust shield without one. The washers I used were just basic 1/2" washers, they measure .090" thick. I still have to get a good measurement of rotor to shield interference. I'm guessing its somewhere around .030-.050".

Yup. Everything else is based off that hole so it needs to be dead nuts.

Does anyone know if the neon rear disk setup and the intrepids are the same? I can't find any neons with the rear disks, but there are plenty of intrepids around here where I live.
Re: Neon disc swap how to

The caliper bracket is different, but the caliper and rotor are the same. I have no idea if an Intrepid bracket will work.

Re: Neon disc swap how to

Back to looking around for me. Hey, thanks for coming up with this idea. I was looking all over for a cheap way to make my car into rear disk. I will be doing it as soon as I find the parts.

Re: Neon disc swap how to

This sucks! I've been to three big scrap yards in the GTA area and can't find anything. Either they don't have the Sport Neons or the brakes have already been cut out. I am starting to believe that this is a popular mod with the rear drum brake Neon crowd as well.

Did anybody get the parking brake to work with the 3rd gen yet?

Also, the j-body uses the Torx-55 to hold the hub on, what's on the Neon so I'm prepared for it?

Jay

It is. When I was looking for a complete setup, I must have found ten or so on ebay.

The hub is on there with a big (maybe 28 or 30mm) nut. I'm pretty sure the bracket is four 15mm bolts. I know theres no Torx anywhere though. You should be safe with all metric tools. Its been a while since I took it all apart

You guys have any updates on this setup?
