So im just alright with disconnecting the neg terminal???,i really didn't want to go throw that long process of unpluging etc repluging the airbags back in like it's on his website

another question for you, does that cover that goes over the air bag just snap of are does it come out with the dash in one pieace.

sorry guys, i ran out of posts.

1cavy- yes, you can just disconnect the terminal. ive never heard of an airbag going off when someone was changing the battery. positive or negative first, will always be a debate, but i always take off neg first.

dino- whip out the multimeter, and have yoself some FUN. find which one has constant 12v by just testing each wire with the car off, only one will give you 12v. then you gotta figger out which speaker wire is which. it can be done, but its a project!!

Dino, I suggest you take your car to a professional installer, especially if you have a 2000+. There's a data wire in there that will screw up your computer if you don't hook it up correctly. Search for posts on wipers not working, interior lights not lighting, and strange stuff like electronics failing in the dash. It's better to be careful at this point. Just my $0.02.

For those who worry about having no chimes on their 2000+ j-bodies:

I was doing some research apparently jeep, bmw, and honda owners have to deal with a similar problem. (not class 2 but no chimes). Apparently 92-00 Civics (some trims) didn't even come with a headlight reminder chime, so what the owners have done is they have bought 12 V alarms and wired them up, you can buy either a cheapo one or a nicer sounding one for 10$ heres the link:
civic chimes

Another thing that someone proposed is making the headlights shut off automatically instead of hearing a chime, some guy that you can disconnect the constant wire at the headlight swtich and connect a switched power wire (wiper fuse splice) that way when you turn off your car the headlights go off also.

Also i was thinking about something if I was to grab a 95-99 chme unit from a cavalier/sunfire and wire it up at all the points ex. headlights, seatbelt, etc. I took a look at a service manual all of the wire colors are the same from 95-05. Would this damage the BCM?

Was just reading through this post, and it is mind boggling. I had no trouble putting in an aftermarket deck and amp/subs into my 2004 Sunfire. got a wiring harness with chime unit, about $100, just unplug factory deck, plug in harness, then connect new deck, run amp wires, and NO PROBLEMS. Have not re-located the factory deck to trunk yet, but plan too one day. And with the factory deck being part of the RDS DataLink system, there are some issues with not relocating the factory deck, mainly, if you start having some trouble with the car (the example GM gave was power windows not working), the techs may not know what the problem is because they will NOT be able to read the all the computer codes, since the BCM codes go through the radio.

Egad... what is mind boggling, is that that kind of crap still purpetuates in the tech world...

That is 110% bull@!#$. The radio doesn't store codes. The body control module stores BCM codes.. that is its job. It's purpose. It's being.

RDS is a radio feature. There isn't even any extra wiring associated with it. If you remove the radio, obviously you remove the RDS feature. Hell.. you can buy aftermarket decks with RDS in them... they're not special or anything.

Power windows not working? That's the lamest @!#$ I've heard EVER about the factory radio. What dealership was this? I'm going to call them and tell them to get their heads out of their collective asses.

why would hitting or kicking electronics make it work? if its a loose connection, it will only make matters WORSE!! take it back to best buy, and tell them the problem.

well im just plain stoooooopid because my air bag light came on 1 hour after I installed my HU,and yes the battery was dissconected while i was doing this. And crutchfield.com/whatfits sells the chime unit for aftermarket installs such as this ............as far as the rest of the car no problems what so ever just my air bag light, and by the way vista chevrolet also informed me that the air bags will not deploy in any wreck if the stock stereo isnt hooked up..so remember that when u dont hook the stock stereo back up.....have fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Re: 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 radio info!

that is completely NOT TRUE. the airbags have NOTHING to do with the stock stereo, as stated about 400 times already. ive installed 5+ HU's in cavalier/sunfires, and not once has the airbag light come on, or any other light for that matter.

Checked out the info in the site and it is all great. I have installed an aftermarket stereo into my 05 sunfire, and for a year now have had absolutely no problems (other than losing the annoying chimes). I got around the 12v acc wire by tapping into the wiper harness and all is great.

I'm not sure you guys will believe this or not, but I called a local install shop and asked for a wiring haress for a 02 Cavy. Hey said "Wellllllll, you have two options one is $100 and you can keep your chimes, two $11 and you will lose them"

Humm, wonder what to do. lol. Thanks for this great post. Lots of good info in here. Lots of dumbass too. But it is the internet. I just can't believe some of the stuff people do.

Yeah, definitely can't cause any problems installing an aftermarket radio with the cheap $13 harness or whatever. I did and I didn't have any problems and if you still have doubts, why don't you learn something about electronics and check out the wiring diagram for the entire car and then if you still can't figure out why your airbags and @!#$ deploy or why the power windows stop working then you are definitely too stupid to be installing an aftermarket stereo. If one more person posts here not knowing what the hell they are talking about and saying something tragic happened to their car after not using the 100 dollar door chime piece of @!#$ then I am going to trace their ip and stab their mother.

If you read it... he just totalled his 2001 Cavy.. and the airbags DID go off... (when he totalled it).. and the fact that they went off sucked...

So... yeah... it's all good... (way to bring back September! )
