Well guys I want a bimmer. The m5 may be sold :/ the dealer said there's a guy waiting for his loan to be approved then he's gonna get it. I may look for a E36 m3. Lot cheaper and easier to work on.

And I want a Viper. What's your point? We all want MANY things, but you have to be sure that it's the right thing to do at that point in time.
I've also been wanting a Movado or Tag Heuer for a while now, and even though I can afford it right now, it's something that I'm going to hold off on for just a bit longer.
Just make sure you completely think this through rationally before you jump in, and good luck with either decision that you make.

I fully agree with every thing you have said
But..
He is 18, he is making some cash, he thinks he is king @!#$ and he is not going to listen to anyone. Sounds like his parents have some cash, So even after he gets his dream car at he ripe old age of 18, and the car does break down and needs marjor $$ to fix(which it will, denying this fact only makes you look dumber)or he runs out of $$ once he is on his own, his parents will just bail him out and he will float on.

And you're right. Which is why I did my "good" part in giving good advice. If he ends up making a mistake later on, I give no sympathy. I say too bad, live and learn and you deserve the consequences.

CLC. Do what makes you happy bro. Either way you have a sweet car.
My parents would slap the @!#$ out of me if I tried to buy a $16k at my age.
Screw the haters Charlie, and find a nice M3

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
The only thing I'm gonna add...
If your trying to build credit your doing it wrong, do bot but something with a cosigner, even if it means buying something less expensive if the goal is to build credit buy on your own and make higher then the monthly payments so it's paid off early, that will get you the bigest gain in credit for the money
Thanks for the GOOD advice Joe, Jay, and darkstars.
I appreciate it.
seriously viper and jwright.
I posted a car on a car forum to get the forums thoughts, I wanted opinions on a car, that is all.
Hence why I have not been posting up cold hard facts about my finances and such, I've been pretty vague.
It's my personal business, leave it alone.
Viper, I thought you had nothing but good advice from the start, but then you turned into a douchebag later on with your posts without me even replying.
Here's the last bit of personal info I'll post, don't say anything else about my finances, whether I can afford or not, ect after this please.
I'm paying for it.
Here's my reply about my parents being well off.
My parents are not rich or wealthy by any American standards, they just don't have many things to pay for.
All of their vehicles are paid off, house is also. They pay utilities, insurance, and all other expenses. That's it.
I'm not bragging about the money I make, I simply stated I make good enough money to afford a car like this.
I never said I made bank...
So STFU and stop saying I'm think I'm a hotshot.
If I did I'd be bragging that I make more money then you, I'm buying a car faster then yours, ect.
I'm not saying that by any means.
All I'm saying I can afford a car this nice, so I want one. Why buy a car that's going to depress me to have to drive daily when I don't have to.
Simply put, I'm getting a nice luxury sport sedan either way, I can afford it, give me your thoughts on this vehicle.
Thank to all the others giving the compliments on the M5.
I do agree that I'll probably want to get rid of the cavy after I get something along this line.
But I don't have the heart to do it.
Maybe after I have another car that makes the cavy feel like the POS I know deep down it is lol
Maybe then I'd be able to.
so thoughts on a E36 M3 sedan?
This is my last post because it has nothing to do with your M3 or M5, so I'm going to stop crowding it. Notice that many ppl in this thread have had similar things to say about being careful, not just me.
But...
You talk about your finances and how you can afford this and that. That's fine, but don't make it sound like you're on some high horse. IMO,
nobody is impressed that you're buying a 10 year old german car with poor reliability, for $16k. I looked at M5's when I was searching for a car as well, and decided against it once I found the figures, even though I do agree that they are damn nice cars. Also, $16k is nothing anymore for cars - you can't even buy a new mid-level cobalt or civic for that price. So again, no one cares how much money you make or how much you can afford etc etc etc.
And I wasn't giving you dbag comments about what you should be doing. I'm giving my advice because I've lived exactly what you're about to do. It's of many ppl's opinion that you should NOT be buying major items when you're about to have a major life change (read the "I'm inheriting a house!" thread in this forum as well). You'll see what I'm talking about. You need to settle your life first in your new atmosphere, then do the new stuff.
Also, having a nice car on a campus isn't going to work.
It's going to get @!#$ up, I guarantee it. I had many friends at many different campuses nationwide that kept their cars at home for this very reason. Then you'll be making a sad post here on JBO how _____ and _____ happened to your really nice car.
And as a final thought (Jerry's final thoughts), if I was your parents, I would be kicking your ass if you were planning to buy a new car and I was paying for your college. I'd make you pay for your own college if you wanted to spend a lot of money on a car just before you go to college. At the same time, if you are paying for your college, and you want to buy a car, unless you are making SERIOUS money (which at your age I highly doubt), then you are going to get yourself into a world of debt. At the age of 18.
If you want to gain credit, get a credit card. That's what I did and by the time I left college I had a credit score of 700, and that's with basically no "real" income and zero debt on that card as well (paid off every month).
You know the dbag stereotype that many BMW drivers have right? Well, looks like you might be fitting in just perfectly
I wasn't being a dbag before, but this time maybe I am just a little. In all seriousness as I said before, read from the forum posts of other people's opinions, gain from their words (whether you accept or reject) and good luck with whatever you choose....

I only have a couple things to add.
I don't you make that "good" money if you are going back to school. You also don't need a $16k car to get through school. Hell, I make what some would call "good" money, and I drive an 8 year old truck, and love it. I could afford better, but it really just about A to B.
Second, you said yourself earlier you still owe on the cav. Well, the get it paid off. Also, if you get a co-signer on a loan, it will do little or nothing to build your credit. All your hard work, and payments will only build the co-signer's credit, as they are the one who assumes responsibility for the loan.
Third, and I know some will hate on me for saying this, so please people, I am not trying to offend. But, a Cav makes a better daily driver then it does a weekend warrior. Again, sorry, but it is true. Just get yourself through school now, and worry about cars later.

Friendly advice doesn't = hating dips
hit.
Another thing to add, I hate the term bimmer and much as I do gixxer. Both anger me.
go to any campus and you will find plenty rockin g35's, 350z's, there is someone here with a maserati, i see multiple cobra mustangs. with charlie getting a bmw its really not that big of a deal, 16k for a car is nothing compared to what some kids drive. just because you are not in the same situation charlie is in doesnt mean you need to put him down in what he is doing. realistically the bmw tag on this situation makes everyone stir in their seat because it seems higher class but you could easily spend more on a cobalt ss and no one would have an issue with him buying that.
give charlie advice on the car, back him up on yes its a good car or no its not and because of certain reasons. Charlie is a really good kid and seems to be smart, leave the finances to him and his parents, they will let him know if this is a bad idea. if they do not want him buying a car then hopefully he will respect that and take their advice but id hope Charlie would take his parents advice over advice thats coming from people off a CAVALIER forum.
goodluck Charlie. keep me posted man.
Any BMW that cost 60 grand 4 years ago, thats now worth under 20 is going to need a lot of work.
There is a kid on another forum went and got a E36 M3 for 17 grand, He had to drop 3 grand on it in the first month. on this things like a timing chain and some kind of over priced sensor that only lasts a few years on them.
DO your self a favor and keep You cavy its a good car, and focus on getting school payed off or maybe buying a house or take a year off and travel. Were you are right now in life will dictate were you are 10 years from now,
Half the reason your country is soo screwed with all kinds of debt is because people like you have to spend a bunch of money on something just to impress people they don't even know.
I'm not trying to be a dick, but listen I'm older that you I've been around a lot more then you, I was once 18, and every time some one would try to help me out with some sound advice I would tell them to screw off. But looking back I kinda wish I took some of that advice. I'm just trying to save you from major headaches a few years down the road. Feel free to call me a douche for raining on your parade, but I'm honestly just trying to help you out a bit.
Your 18 bud, your about a 1/4 as smrt, as you think you are.
No offence.
A nine to a very near ten year old BMW, you're begging for trouble.
Live and learn. Best of luck.

This is how the forum gets so off-track and into bitchy arguments.
Nobody ever said anything regarding a Crapbalt SS, if you'd like to reflect on my posts feel free to quote them.
This "CAVALIER" forum speaks from life experience, personally I wish I'd had better priorities at his age then what I did, and if I could've I'd be focusing on school and creating a good life for myself versus pissing away money on an old BMW when I could enjoy much better in a few years.
Hey Charlie, get a Cobalt SS, best car ever Rodimus Prime will vouch.
Thanks Gary,
and Joe.
I have looked at this situation a little differently after the good advice given by those that are giving it in a kindly(non-put down manner).
I'd really like this thread to turn in the original direction I had intended.
I want a c
omfortable 4door sedan)doesn't have to be 4 doors but needs to have a spacious back seat), that isn't a turd.
Thoughts?
I'm not going to buy a 1500$ beater, that you can't change my mind on, I want something nice.
Advice please on cars only please.
Here's the cars I've been looking at since that m5 is now gone.
'04 mini cooper s
'97 e36 M3.
I'm rethinking the wrx wagon idea, mainly because I'll be doing a lot of biking at school, and that would be very practical.
Once again, sorry I am to blame for the direction this thread went also.

i understand no one said anything about a cobalt ss, hence i used it as my OWN example. the cobalt is like the brother of the cav and so most people here would be all OMGBUYTHEBALTCUZITSAMAZING!!! i wasnt trying to poke at you and its perfectly fine that this CAVALIER forum speaks from life experience but your life experience isnt the same as say mine, or charlies, or the lil girl next doors.
im not about to go dumping 16k on a new car, i am in college and i know damn well i cannot afford it. this is why i have fun playing with cars in a way i can, i drive a cavalier, i save, i buy some parts here and there but i focus on my school first. If charlie can afford the bmw then more power to him, i cannot, but i am not him and vice versa. i am also not the girl here at school that drives the RHD sti or the dude that has an s2000 and a 240sx, or the kid that has 2 audi tt's, an ek civic, a procharged silverado, an r1, a hayabusa, some quads and some other bs. not everyone is the same or will deal with the same issues u or i do.

That wasn't directed towards you at all, you were giving friendly advice, others were not.
Cooper S would be pretty cool, better yet, find a Werks

Paying someone to install parts and bragging about it being fast, is like watching someone bang your wife and being proud to raise their kids.
They had a JCW Cooper down here for a steal, though you said spacious 4-door.
Can't beat how practical a WRX wagon would be, for both room, price, reliability, and biking.
Have you seen charlie??? A mini cooper is more than spacious for that lil guy!
Subaru all the way.
Bug-eye wagon and swap it down the road.
BAM!!
