Hey

I am new to this forum but I have the same issue.

I have a 2001 sunfire which has had the tranny noise since day 1. The dealership apparently changed it once and made no difference at all. that was at 5300 KM. In is now at 40,000 km and the symptoms that i have had goes as such.

shifting from 1st to 2nd: when the clutch is released in second gear you hear a rattle in the tranny.

when driving in 1st and 2nd at low speeds the car sounded like a diesel engine.

when driving in 4th and downshifting into 3rd at 2500RPM when the engine gets to 2000RPM with pressure on the engine and the clutch release the car will surge.

I just got the car back this morning and it works like a top, i have a full 2 years of warranty left on the car so burn baby burn. The explanation that i received from a reputable transmission person is that with the getrag transmission that is installed in a BMW there is so much more torque created by the engine thus making pressure in the tranny so it won't make noise.

Oh BTW just so everyone knows ----- the owner of the Pontiac dealership where i purchasd the vehicle had told me that "You purchased a Sunfire, its not like you bought a Cadillac."

That solves all lifes answers - - - "You have to be rich as hell to be that fkin ignorant"

Mr. Goodwrench, read these two posts, particularly my replies, as I feel they are correct...

I'm not alone!!!!!!!!!!!! I have had this noise forever, I bought my car oct of 02, and heard a little noise, thought it was normal? so I let it go now almost two years later it has got so bad I do the duck and cover when i'm driving around people or at stop lights, so I took it to the dealer, no help (thats normal) thats all they can say. so I start looking, thinking that im not the only one with this problem, and why should I three of my friends have cavaliers 2-2003's 1-2004 all stick no noise my girlfriends is a a/t no noise. so I check here not expecting to find anything and BAMM!!! over 400 replys to this problem. so i'm going to try the different oil fixes listed the only good thing is that I live in joliet il home of the RT66 drag strip and raceways, so there is alot of different speed shops around here so finding oils that might fix it will be eazy. Well hope every one finds a fix for there car, if not get a loud system to hide the noise at stops. thanks for the info. and to hear this is more common than i thought.

geez still sucks no resolution on the issue. I traded my cavy in last march to get the srt-4. I tried everything to get rid of the noise, but could never get rid of it. I kinda miss the cavy though. I put so much work into it I cant believe I got rid of it. Then again things started to fall apart on it so much I couldnt risk it so had to trade in.
Shifted / Kickass, do you have a Getrag transmission in your J-Body ?

I do, and I have the problem. GM / Chevrolet / Getrag could seem to care LESS, it's just a Cavalier (bullshirt) ! It was a new car with a problem from the factory that should have been taken care of, NOT pushed aside as 'normal' . If it is 'normal' all they have to do is put it in writing, and GUARANTEE me it will never cause a problem for me or any future owner, and cover it 100% if it does.

Hi,

I bought a 2002 Z24 yesterday. I have the sound and am going to try the B & M fix but I also have another symptom that I didn't hear in any of the posts that I have read. (still have to read pages 15-18). When I shift up to any gear it seems like it takes a full second for the RPM's to drop after I have engaged the clutch & let off the gas. Will the B & M make this shift smoother??? Could my clutch be going bad or need adjusting??? Could my accelerator pedal or cable need to be oiled??? I am at a loss. I could probably get my money back but it would be a total pain as I bought it from a private party and he had a payoff & I got a loan for it.

The RPMs do that because the flywheel is heavy. Its a good thing for day to day driving. For performance driving just shift higher in the rpm band and you win't notice it as much.
Re: GETRAG TRANNY NOISE

Jack Voigt

If the RPMS drop slower then other cars it because of our heavier flywheel (22lbs). The heavier flywheel will help you achieve a smoother shift between gears and prevents the jerky effects of lightweight flywheel.

By using B&M Trick Shift ATF you will get a smoother shifts.

Your clutch is self adjusting, so no adjustment is needed.

Never oil the accelerator cable, but it is o.k to oil the pedal if only you have a squeek.
The last manual transmission I had was a pontiac Fiero & the shifting was clean, quick & fast. In My Z24 I feel like I push the clutch, let off the gas & then I should wait a second because the RPM's sit at 3,000 or 4,000 for what feels like forever. Should I wait or is it ok to shift gears with the RPM's so high. This is really different from any stick I have ever owned. Is this just something that I will get used to? By the way, to me it seems much more obvious when I shift at higher RPM's.

And what was the final verdict on the B&M vs other lubricants? I still have to read those last 4 pages so I haven't seen the outcome of the last batch of tests Goodwrench did.

I have 75k miles on this silver 2002 badboy. Is there anything I should do or check???

Yes, you'll get used to it.
Yep it's is safe. You got decent synchros to work with here for fast shifts.
Shifting will improve with the B&M Synthetic Trick Shift.

In the end, stay with B&M to have the best of all worlds.
I've notice if you use Penzoil's Sythetic blend ATF, you'll get a little better shifting action at the expense of a little more noise.

Any more Q's I'll try my best to answer.

On a side not, i've pin pointed a few problems that some people have associated with their tranny's which tends to come from outside sources and not the tranny but other @!#$ that is loose and rattles when the engine is put under a load and starts to shake.

But one cause of some noise surprised me..... last week I was replacing my tranny mounts with the new Prothane inserts and apon removal of my stock front mount i noticed that the aluminum center in the mount was actually loose in the mount, well this rattled back and forth in the housing (wear marks evident on the mounting points on the car) causing almost 80% of my noticable noise, this i later found out after putting the new mounts in. She's now quiet as a mouse, minus the exhaust and slight rattle from the tranny.
I switched to 3 quarts of B&M Synthetic trick shift today in my 2002 Cavalier Z24 (2.4L 150 hp) . I have not driven it much yet but it seems quieter & shifting seems smoother but... my check engine light came on. I have only had this car for 3 weeks but this is the 1st time this light has come on. I didn't see anyone else post that this happened after they switched. Is this normal??? Will it go out??? Do I need to take it to the dealer??? The shop where I had it changed called me to say that the book said only put in 1.8 quarts. I said go ahead & put in all 3.
