3.1 turbo question
Wednesday, May 07, 2008 6:10 PM
What, besides the turbo and exhaust manifold, is the difference between the naturally aspirated 3.1 and the 3.1 turbo? Can I take my n/a 3.1 and turbo it without damaging the motor?

given a long enough timeline, the survival rate for everyone drops to zero

Stronger block (20% nickel casting)
Larger combustion chambers
Hardened crank
Forged rods
Hypereutectic pistons w/28cc dish
High volume oil pump
22 lb injectors
Taps/fittings in block/oil pan for turbo oil/water lines
Larger fuel pump
3 core radiator
Larger, dual cooling fans
Hardened transmission gears

Nothing major.........

Given the age of the average 3.1L, not the best idea in the world.

the larger combustion chambers are a myth, even if they were larger it would be so minimal that it wouldn't matter either way. The Turbo 3.1 heads are just early casting 3.1 heads.. even from GM they've been replaced with the latest casting which is stock for a 94 Z24 3.1

all 3.1's, 2.8's, 3.4 DOHC's, 3.4's, 3100's and 3400's got the same forged rods.. stock. (aside from early 80s small journal 2.8's)

the pistons are a myth, Mclaren even said the pistons were cast stock units.

the oil pump and 22lb injectors were there.. Possibly the crank but there is still some debate on that. Either way the stock cast iron crank has been proven to near 500 HP. If you want something better the LX9 3500 crank is forged steel but has larger rod journals so clearancing in the block is a must. It should support 1000+ HP

yes, the N/A 3.1 can take boost.. maybe 8-10 PSI. Lots of people have done it with great results. If the engine is healthy you'll be fine. Tuning is a must. Most people run a modified version of the TGP code.
