HOME MADE TURBO MANIFOLD!!
Tuesday, April 12, 2005 2:36 PM
I was board So I went out to the garage and threw this together. Now I know its not the prettiest thing, but it cost me nothing to make. Its not complete. but here are some pics for now. Its made out of 2inch Gas pipe 90s and Tees. The pipe it the thinest part at 1/8 inch thickness. I am not expecting much out of this, so you don't have to tell me its not going to work. I will just find out how it holds up.

Very rough looking

But if it's functional then all the better

Let us know how it works out

Who cares how it looks. Props on the work. If it holds up....you got my vote!

I mean, it costs like maybe 20 dollars max. Cant go wrong there!

Let us know how it holds up.

bad ass. If it can hold 15 psi I'll buy one from you.

What does boost pressure have to do with the exhaust manifold?

Since this was my first attempt it looks rough. If I decice to make another one I bet I could build it 10X better. I will keep you guys updated on how it works.

If it crack it cracks. The whole thing has cost my $20.oo and that cause i am buying the engine flange already made.

i've heard that generating more boost causes more heat and pressure inside the manifold and some manifolds simply cannot tolerate too much heat. sorry for not explaining.

More air and more heat, yes, but not more pressure. By the time the exhaust gets into the manifold, its expanded again anyway. There is some slight compression due to the compressor fan blades resistance to spinning (aka turbo lag), but after that gets going, especially when you let off the throttle, a turbo can actually scavange the gasses. Any one know how thick the avg, turbo manifold is? I am curious.

ok....i work in a tube mill that makes continuous butt weld pipe, which is your basic low pressure gas pipe. Now i can't tell exactly from the pictures, so if you let me know what size and schedule they are i can give ya an actual wall thickness, and its pressure capabilities. When we make our pipe, before we can get the steel to roll we have to heat it up to about 2400 degrees. I don't think you will have a problem with this setup, but keep us updated...if it works i can make a few for free...and probably have one of the guys down at work machine them a little and make them a little prettier

just remember, the turbocharger; whose life hangs from that manifold; costs alot more than 20 bucks

Well the thickness of the walls that i am using is a tiny bit larger than 1/8 inch.
As for the turbo that hangs to this death trap, lol. I am going to be welding up brackets to hold it. Like I said I could make a much prettier one, now that I have done this one.

heh i hate to be the one to look at the glass as half empty, but what are you gunna do if the manifold brakes and a chunk of it kisses the blades in the turbo?

The fittings i am useing to build this monster are not the kinds of metals to just break, they will crack, but never just break. At least I hope so.lol

love it man, should work ok, I say make sure i is cast steel (not iron) and it should be fine. just my opionin though, but other than that looks pretty good.

looks like crap IMO i would be ashamed to have that on my car!
it may work but it still looks half assed, no wonder jbodies have a bad reputation. tho it is nice to see someone do something on there own, i have way more respect for someone who builds there own instead of going out and buying one...
