HM282 issues w/ pictures HELP!!!
Sunday, February 08, 2009 8:30 AM
I purchased a muncie 282 from mantrans on Ebay for my 2.4l engine and I rec'd the transmission only to realize that it is the European version with completely different mounting locations. The transmission was advertised as the HM282 used in the swap for later Cavaliers and Sunfires but this was an inaccurate statement since the swap uses the Domestic version of this transmission with the same mounting locations. I am now stuck with a transmission that I cannot use because the mounting points are so far off and I am out $400.00. Here are some pictures to show what I am talking about with the mounts. Any ideas guys?

I emailed the guy that I purchased it from and told him that since he has it advertised on his auction that this is the version (domestic) used for the swap into the cavs/sunfires. We'll see what he says. I sent him the pics that I have posted here as well.

Scott, are the internals of these things swappable to the Domestic case and bellhousing do you know? Did you ever file a claim w/ paypal or have the option to return the thing?

never had the option to return it...paypal didnt help since the "buisness" said it would fit and they said it was MY fault it wouldnt fit.....as you can see it is not OUR fault it doesnt fit..it is the wrong trans.
however....from my research i truly believe the internals to be swapable...however keep in mind the gears have different ratios and may or may not be desired depending on your application.
the FDR is 3.94 still but all the lower gears have a higher ratio...the case is the same just simply doesnt have the mount locations made into it...everything inside of it should be interchangable with the case you had...what i plan on doing is taking my NVG out of the car and have all the internals swaped in from the new tranny minus the gears. im going to use the gears that came with my nvg in order to maintain gear ratios, yet utilize the 0mile syncros and rails from the "new tranny"............i making any sense?

yep...complete sense. My car will be boosted so do you think I would have an issue if I were to use the 3.94 FD over the stock setup?

Come up with a way to file a complaint other than it doesn't fit. If that means you gotta f#%k something up so be it.

I pulled these #'s from a fiero forum. Someone over there bought one of these and pulled it apart and found this:

1st
tooth count
13 input 49 output
ratio 3.77 ......

Stock Fiero V6 1st is 3.50

2nd
tooth count
21 input 46 output
ratio 2.19

Stock Fiero V6 2nd is 2.05

3rd
tooth count
24 input 33 output
ratio 1.38

Stock Fiero V6 3rd is also 1.38

4th
tooth count
34 input 35 output
ratio 1.03

Stock Fiero V6 4th is .94

5th
tooth count
41 input 33 output
ratio .80

Stock V6 Fiero 5th is .72

FD
Ring tooth count 71
Pinion tooth count 18
ratio 3.94

I'm new to 5 speeds so what could I use out of this that would be beneficial? I have a lead on a nvg from a 94 HO grand am that I'm trying to work out right now. The used nvg has over 100,000 miles on it and I'm going to be tearing it apart to throw a TG insert in. Chris, do you know if any of internals from the HM282 can swap over to the NVG? Is the 94 HO FD ratio 3.94?

Any idea if any of the gears I have listed will make the car feel like a dog?

a friend an i ran some numbers on the 4DFF tranny (pictured above) and its gear ratios and from what we can tell,
while it does have higher gear ratios and will rev up like a son bitch 2nd and 3rd gear shifts will put you just below your power band and cause the car to possibly bog during those shifts(talking about drag strip racing shifts here)
and of course this all depends on your power band and what youve done with the car. if your boosed your power band is going to be different you may not have this problem
