1/4 Mile Times After the S/C
Monday, May 08, 2006 9:06 AM
Well, I went to the track this weekend to test out the S/C on my '99 Cav Z24. My best time was a 15.0 at 92 MPH. I still have stock exhaust, stock manifold, and no alky injection yet. I was hoping to at least get into the 14's, but oh well. Maybe next time. My car was bogging at the bottom of every gear, so I think I've got to switch to some different spark plugs. Hopefully after that it will run better.

I plan on doing 2.5" exhaust with header in the next few weeks and hopefully alky injection also....Money has been running a little short lately. But I will be going to the track again after that and I will post some more times.

stock exhause is probably whats holding you back the most right now. also, what rpm are you shifting at? trap still looks a little low.

I was shifting at about 5900 RPM give or take a bit.

The subs were out along with lots of other stuff. I gutted the car pretty well.

92 mph is about right for a 15.0 time. What were your 60's and 1/8 times? 9.7 1/8's?

shifting it just before the rev limiter will help

that is sorta right on track for a basically bone stock gm s/c'd car.

now mod that thing.

like i said b4, i will take you for a ride and u will go back to your car and want h2o injection, cams, t/b, full exhuast and a 9 lb flywheel. i bet ya

well sure, its right for a 15.0, but there are practically stock ecos running 14.8's/14.9's at 91-ish... considering the 2.4 makes about the same stock hp, a supercharged one should be trapping higher... and he just answered why it isn't trapping higher, he's shifting way too low. An extra 500 rpm through each of 3 whole gears is quite a bit of time and speed being lost because he's not taking advantage of the gearing of the car. Believe me I know.... when i first started racing the bug I listened to a bunch of posers who said they were running their best times shifting at 5500 rpm.... I LOST 4 mph in trap and got half a second SLOWER in the 1/4. And the gearing/powerband between the 1.8T and 2.4 isn't that much different. Technogeek extraordinaire Dave Coleman once wrote "The best time to shift is when the power in the next gear equals the power of the gear you're in now. Since that rarely ever happens, just SHIFT AT REDLINE!!"

I'll wait to see the slips. It dosen't matter if OTHER cars run 15.0's stock or with bolton's......his car could have run high 15's pre S/C. So shaving off nearly 1 second would actually be pretty good. Some cars just dont run as fast as other...and thats a FACT!!!

Quote:

Believe me I know

And I dont? LMAO!!! Shifting that car a mere 300 rpm's more wold get him a solid 14.9 at best...probably around the same trap speed. And judging by his traps compared to his 1/4 time...I'll guess mid-high 2.2 60's. So not to bad there either considering how hard the S/C'd cars are to launch.

Also...just for reference...I ran 1.5's @91 shifting right before limiter...so not all cars that trap 91's will run in the 14's
Every car is different.

your deffinatly spinning some, get those 60' times down and youll be good for 14's.

Well you have a 1999, so you're carring a Isuzu tranny. Getrag trannies have a more aggressive gearing. Also the altitude/weather may be hurting you.
But practice man.
Find the max rpm with max grip without spinning (chirp will do) at launch, modulate the clutch so it won't bog down, then shift at redline.

I got rid of the Isuxu tranny after the diff. went out on it. Check my sig. I've got the NVG-T550. Yeah, I either bogged when I left the line or I was spinning with wicked wheel hop. I've got the SPEC Stage 2 clutch, so its kinda hard to get in between that.

not that good 60 foot times.

the 2 years i had this s/c, i never really cared to try to launch it. i had my launching down good b4 when i used to race. my 60 foots were decent. ( i should dig up my old 15.0' time slips to see ).

anyways, keep practicing. i noticed the first few days down the track were the worst. once u get the hang of everything the times will drop.

just because YOU couldn't do it, doesn't mean a better driver in your car couldn't have. Trap speed is the main indicator of what potential 1/4 mile ET could be. I didn't say that all cars that trap 91 are going to run 14's, but they ARE able to if they trap that high. And you prove my point with the quote above... he's trapping 1 mph more than you already, shifting 300 rpm lower through 3 gears... overall, thats almost 1000 rpm of potential acceleration being lost. So he could really trap as high as 93-94 just by shifting higher. Then if he gets those 60' times down to the 2.0 or 2..1 region, for all we know, trap speed could be getting lost in wheelspin... mid 14's are possible with his car in the same setup and just better driving. Of course we also don't know if the subs and other audio equipment in his registry were in the car at the time... if they were.... TAKE THEM OUT!!! Weight in rear = the devil!!!! On FWD cars anyway.... That'll be another reason for the low trap.

Granted, going from stock to S/C isn't going to be easy to adapt to, so the OP has his fair shot at the learning curve for a while. What you really want to stay away from is doing things like saying "oh, its hard to launch an S/C car"... no excuse. Even S/C'ed, with enough practice, and weight reduction from the rear, dropping the tire pressure some, etc... you CAN cut 2.0 60's... you just have to keep trying different things until you find what works for you. But if you make excuses about it long enough, you're beating yourself in the mental game (which is a big part of drag racing) and if you do that, you're dooming yourself.

k...whatever...you win. I guess I just suck at driving since I traped 91 and couldn't get into the 14's with Intake and cat-back in a cavalier. But I'm sure YOU could have gotten a 14.9..right.

Anybody here ever pulled a 2.0 60' in their street tire (as in all seasons..etc) eaton powered LD9?

make whatever excuse you want bro... i cut 2.0's with 260 ft-lbs of torque at 3500 rpm... thats a way bigger torque spike than any m45 is putting out which makes traction a lot bigger of an issue. And i did it on the same stock Eagle RSA's that most J's came with. Same size even. I really like how just because you couldn't do it means that you think its impossible, thats pretty funny.

Have you driven an Eaton S/C'd cavy? Maybe you should before you go saying how easy it is to cut 2.0 60's on street tires with basically zero suspension mods. i dont give two ***s what you pulled in your car...they are totally different cars with different weight ratios ans suspensions set-ups.

But go ahead thinking you know it all. Thats why I love this site.
