I'm glad they're over there spending their time doing things like this rather than thanking their deity of choice that they're still alive. I guess being over there doesn't make you appreciate life, like it should.

Stuff like this will happen.

Doesn't change the fact that it is inexcusable.

Yeah, that was pretty immature and heartless. Was the sarcastic title meant to apply to soldiers in general? If you think that the actions of a few soldiers has any bearing on our soldiers as a whole I would disagree.

I don't support the war in the least bit, but I do support the few (it seems) men and women that know how to behave themselves and not use their penis extensions for wrong. The previous videos of them taunting and teasing children with bottles of water and now throwing rocks at a crippled anyimal are deplorable and I'm ashamed to be represented by such ingorant humans.

Well, I agree in every way, except I don't believe that the majority of our soldiers are like that. You seriously do? To each their own.

Alexis you have ass hats everywhere always have and always will. I actualy gave the soldiers the benifit of the doubt thinking maybe they were just trying to run the dog off but then the dude with teeth that could be used for a can opener was laughing and acting like a dick. Benifit of the doubt was quickly removed.

i thought the same thing until the same moment.

we had a situation in iraq, where we were trying to maintain a stealth positon until a dog came up and started barking.......running at him, flashlights, anything we thoulght of wouldn't work until i had the idea to peg him with a rock, that made him run off. i don't like hurting animals, but when its either hurt an animal, or risk giving away position and getting killed. sorry doggy but your getting a rock in the rib. im not about to die for a mangy mutt that will most likely be dead in a month.

however when the guys in the vid started laughing, then it wasn't about stealth, it was over their cruelness.....now thats another story, thats just mean. but oh well, not my problem

I said men and women. I'm not some "broad" with "fun bags" thinking I rule all. I can form a coherent thought and give my opinion. You dont go to car shows for that reason? Good for you, letting "broads" get to you. I'd like to point out the hypocrisy of your statement, saying I'm stereotyping yet you went of on a tangent about 'broads' at car shows.

Yeah, his post was hypocritical but I think he was also being sarcastic.(read the very last part of his post) He wanted to show you how wrong it is to stereotype people, like assuming that most people in the armed services are like the soldiers in the vid without backing up your claims.

I dislike the fact that, because you wear a uniform, you're holier than thou. I was NOT saying every single soldier is a disgrace. There are many on this forum alone that I am proud of and thank for what they do. If any of them were to do something like in that video, I would lose all respect for them. The fact that acts such as this get overlooked is sick. I can't imagine how many people justify what happened in that video.

I agree, wearing a uniform doesn't give you the right to act like a jerk. You didn't mean me personally, right? I understand that you were not saying that all soldiers were a disgrace but you did say that only a few know how to behave themselves. What was that conclusion based on? A few videos? I'm sure many people would justify what happened on that video or downplay how cruel it was because they feel that the soldiers are under a lot of pressure and deserve some leniency. The bottom line is that is was pathetic and they should be ashamed, which they obviously aren't. Hopefully they put the dog out of it's misery with a shot to the head.

I don't think that anyone is trying to justify it, I just know that by and large these soldiers are doing the best they can under extreme circumstances. I posted a video in the Off Topic a few weeks ago of the soldiers taking off their own armor and putting it on some WWE employees during a mortar attack. They clearly didn't think twice about it. They just did it. Completely unselfish. Made me proud.

so lets just say, you happen to meet someone on here that is a soldier....you meet them in person, and when something goes down...a guy shootin up a crowd, or anything else of the nature, he jumps on you to protect you...
down the road you find out that he did something non-respectful...maybe something that you hate. how would you look at him?

or say...you see someone doing something like this on the video, you say you have no respect for them. a month later he saves some people from some crazy situation (not caught on footage of course). do you still have no respect for him?

i dislike the fact that you can knit pick all you want, but haven't all of us in life done something stupid or something that we now hated the fact that we did it?

i have friends that drive drunk, they are not the brightest, and i give them a ride whenever they call..however they are still my friends.
if one happens to drive and gets in an accident and kills someone, yes, i would lose a lot of respect, but i would not hate him.
we are all young and stupid, or just plain stupid at times.

*edit
i am not condoning what has happened on the video, i'm at work and can't even view it...i'm just trying to gain perspective on how you look at and judge others.

Alexis: This is where you're going to find out that choosing your words a little more carefully will do you good. The thread title is pejorative, and it encompasses all soldiers as opposed to the few in the video. Putting in the words "some of" would make it a little less provocative, and narrow your focus to just the people in the vid.

However, T2 does have a point... While what they're doing in the video is gross, inhuman and inexcusable, it's also not the best or worst of what they do.

A person is not the sum of their worst act. I don't think they're doing anything right or noble or what not in that vid, but I will say that stress does weird things to people, and I hope that they don't act like that toward people or animals when they're not in a combat patrol mode or at home. I suspect that the length of duty, and type of duty is tuning up the nerves of some service personnel that are deployed, and they're shedding the stress in unhealthy ways. It's not their fault, but then again, the people that determine the length of a tour of duty and the rules behind their tours haven't been in a combat zone ever or at best in a long time.

This thread is an example of how people really dont understand what the military is all about.

I agree with this completely.

I always find it laughable how people (civilians) expect soldiers to go through basic training, and combat training, where you are moulded into a military personality, who can defend and kill another human being on the spot......... and then they are supposed to act civil 24/7?????

Come on.

Yes I agree this is not the best behavior, but under the circumstances and the pressure, expecting military personel to be on thier best behavior is rediculous. They have to live each day knowing that there may be combat and they may die. For whatever reason they are there, they are now no longer able to be civil ALL the time. Its been conditioned out of most soldiers.

The reason for this? Propper defence of the civilian whole. If we dont have uncivil people to defend civilization there would be no civilization.

One flaw in your argument...

There never has been any civilization. We ARE talking about humans here.

Not that it detracts from your point

Point taken.

I couldnt think of another good word.

Maybe ther should be like a sliding rule of 1-10 value for civility...... no one would be at 10.

I don't want to rag on the soldiers (I thought it was pretty funny) but as long as they are in uniform they represent the United States. If some random people did this they'd just be idiots but in uniform they're idiot soldiers.

I think the outrage lies in the fact that soldiers are so often raised on a pedestal

...Well, as long as they're fighting. Once they're back home that pedestal dissapears MIGHTY quick as the goverment cuts their veteran benefits.

Anyway...

Soldiers are just like any other group of people. 10% good, 90% bad. For each selfless hero that saves kids out of burning buildings while dodging enemy fire, there's like 9 chowderheads that couldn't hack it at McDonalds and need to have someone ordering them around 24/7 because they're such idiotic tools. Think of how insulting to the intelligence the commercials to join the Army are, and think of all the guys that fell for it. These guys don't give a s**t about honor, sacrifice, duty, brotherhood, friendship or loyalty. They just want to drive Hummvees real fast, blow s**t up and shoot at brown people with towels on their heads.

Get a grip people. Know those guys in shop class that would set trashcans on fire? Or the stockboy at Wal-Mart that tells you to go screw yourself? Those are some of the guys wearing uniforms and representing our sacred way of life. Charming innit? Sure, some of them do noble things, but just keep in mind that a lot of the soldiers who killed women and children at My Lai were decorated war heroes too. A more recent example is SPC John Stebbins who fought bravely in Somalia (he won the Silver Star) then in 1999 was convicted of raping his 6 year old daughter.

There are no simple mindless pefectly "good" heroes in the world. Only men who do heroic deeds, and no matter how much we'd like them to live up to our mental image, they are fallible. If you dig deep enough there are plenty of heroic murderers, rapists, drug dealers, wife beaters, pedophiles and psychopaths. Doesn't change the nature of their heroism, but I wouldn't think of them as pure lily white heroes.
