1997 vs 2002 Fuel Tank and Sending Unit HELP!!
Sunday, January 27, 2008 12:53 PM
I am having some big issues with my 97 Z24. First the fuel tank rusted out so I couldn't fill it full without it leaking. Next the filler neck rusted out so it leaks when I put gas in the car and just last week the fuel pump went out so now the car sits until I can figure some things out. The car is actually in awesome condition with 160k on it and worth fixing MYSELF. There is a member on here who is parting his 2002 Cavy and he said I can buy the fuel pump and sending unit off of him. Also the filler neck and tank if shipable(large).

What I need to know is, Will a 2002 sending unit, tank and filler neck work on a 97 car? His has the 2.2 Ecotech with a PLASTIC tank and mine is a 2.4 Quad 4 with a steel tank. Will his sending unit hook up to my car? Fuel lines and electronics?? Are electrical plugs different? Are fuel line hook ups different....etc?

Help PLEASE!

I think the newer (2002) car has a 240 - 33 ohm sender whilst the older '97 has the 0-90 ohm sender, so the sender would be the wrong resistance.

If Joe Malechowski is around, he knows for sure. Joe solved this problem in his engine swap.

my filler neck was rusted too, but i fixed it with gas tank putty.

there is a clamp i guess you would call it that hold the filler neck and vent hose to the car right behind the passenger rear wheel well. i had a pinhole leak right there. i undid the bolt and moved the clamp out of the way ten proceeded to clean the spot where the hole was with a wire brush and brake parts cleaner. once i was satisfied with the area being clean, i pulled out the putty and put it on the spot. i then went to put the clamp back on, but took it back off. like i said, the hole was right where the clamp is, and so is the putty. the putty hardens like steel, which is good, but i was worried about it getting chipped away by it bouncing on and off the clamp as there was a little bit of play there. i wrapped the repaired spot with a rag first to give it some extra protection before i put the clamp back on for the final time.

problem is solved.

thats the exact stuff i used. if the hole in your tank is small enough, it could work in fixing that too.
