BCM Replacement
Thursday, September 11, 2008 8:55 AM
ok I am just curious. If I repalce the bcm would that change the odometer reading? I have looked on GM Dealerworld about replacing the bcm and it doesn't say anything about seting up the mileage. I know when we replace the IPC in the trucks we have to setup the IPC with mileage and engine hours. but I think the odemeter reading is kept in the BCM. I know it's not the IPC or the PCM.

just wondering

thanks guys

Correct, your mileage and other info is stored in the BCM...I used to work as a service tech at a GM dealership and when you install a new BCM you do have to program it with the correct info using a GM specific device (Tech 2, etc)

Aww man... I just bought a replacement BCM for my car, feeling pretty lucky because I picked it cheap enough. Also pleased by the fact that it seemed fairly easy to replace.
Now I read this! It just sort of figures! I suppose only "your friendly neighborhood GM Goodwrench service center" can perform such an act? Just another way to bend you over a table. I guess I'll have to pay the hundreds of dollars I'm quite sure they will charge for that... otherwise, if I don't, I'm committing odometer fraud! Just lovely!

Don't misunderstand me... I still love my J-body, and GM, but GawdalmightyGeezisinheaven!

well I was going to do it up at work and install it.. I was just wondering if there is a setup where you have to input the miles or if the BCM keeps that stored with what ever car it's in and can not be edited. The BCM I have has 45000 miles and the car I am putting into has 119000 miles. So I waswondering how it would effect it.

Sunfire SE-R:
You are EXACTLY RIGHT...9 times out of 10 you need to go pay a GM dealer to do it...unless you know someone with a Tech 2 or comparable device that has programming abilities....If I lived anywhere near you I would certainly help you out on that one. If I remember correctly they used to charge about $100 for the actual programming if you install it ahead of time...if you get it installed there as well, then yeah your wallet is prolly gonna take a good a$$ raping. It used to piss me off how much our service dept would over charge people.

Ecoclean:
Go ahead and install it yourself...you just then need to see Mr Goodwrench to have your cars info (mileage, engine hours, etc) transfered (take your old BCM with you!) When the new one is initially plugged in, it will appear as though your car has the 119000k as well as moving over engine hours and all the other little things it stores.

The BCM I bought was brand new, can I expect the thing to not work at all if I plugged it in? I assume it needs programming to even start the car, (from what I've discovered elsewhere).

All this to correct a simple interior lighting issue. What a freakin' headache!

Is there a way I can repair the existing BCM, everything works fine but the dome, and trunk lights. Fuses are good, bulbs are good, wires are good. Checked into the bad ground theory, and it's grounded through the BCM.

I can maybe still sell the new BCM on E-bay, and hopefully get my money back.

Well I don't for sure, but I would think you could re-route the dome and trunk lights (which was an oh so genious idea for GM to run those through a BCM!). Off the top of my head I can't give a clear idea of how to rewire things...but i would look into something like an aftermarket dome light/switch meant for older cars and hot rods that wouldnt originally have domes...you could use the wiring and relays to bypass the BCM...just a thought.

As far as the BCM itself, it WILL work if you just plug it in and go....but it won't carry over your mileage, engine operating hours, etc...that's the reprogram part....a tech needs to copy that info off of the old BCM and download into the new one....but as far as operation goes, you car will run fine.

I have a friend that owns a fix-it shop, I'm gonna see if he has a diagnostic.

If he doesn't I'll throw the new one in, and see how she spins. It'll be cool to have 000000 miles on it again.

Damn, I just realized I'll lose all my presets on my radio!

What'd really suck is if it reads 999999 miles on it, what can I expect?

If it's new then it should read 0 miles, 0 engine hours, 0 everything...if you buddy has anything comparable to a tech 2 he can take care of it...just take your old bcm along so he can pull all the info off of it

Thanks Evilution, for the advice so far.

The update is, I plugged in the new one today; and the theft lock engaged, rendering the car useless. I guess it's now time to find somebody that can transfer the data over from the old one.

Still at it... question this time is; has anyone tried the PASSLock re-learn procedure, (found in the FAQ's), with a brand new BCM? I'd be a guinea pig, but I don't dare with my daily driver. Seems like it could work, afterall the dome light turned on again when I plugged it in the problem was only relating to the PASSLock, (I might have referred to it as Theftlock before.). I would think if all hell broke loose I could always swap the original faulty one back in, no harm no foul. But, I can't be too sure. I'd rather use the new BCM I bought, but I need to learn as much about what I'm attempting first... anyone got some good advice.

i'm pretty sure the car wont start? its been a while since i worked for pontiac... but i don't think you can program the theftlock without the initial programming. according to alldata it is .6 to replace and i would guess they would add .5 for programming, but i'm thinking you should drive it to a dealer that charges the least for reprogram, swap the bcm and they can push it in and program it for you. thats the best idea i could come up with.

i dont know if the bcm is the same as the ecm but i swap my ecm out from my 02 ecm to a 04 ecm on my eco all i had to do was leave the key on for 10 -12 mins and had not had any problems with it

you guys mention the bcm, and mention miles engine hours etc i didn't know there was a way to check your engine hours. I thought it was just the what they call season odometer and the trip odometer, didn't know there was a way to see total engine hours displayed too unless i just misunderstood what you guys were talking about in which case i apologize.
