Car dies/wants to die time to time.
Thursday, October 02, 2008 8:39 AM
Got a problem from time to time when I start my car. It's a 97 Z24 auto I picked up for the winter. The problem is after I start the car and put it in reverse, doesn't happen in neutral and happens in drive, got this hesitation and wants to shut off.
Most of the time I can get in the car and she works awsome and the problem doesn't occur. Last night I get in the car and she started fine and when I put her down in drive about 5 secs after I do she gets this bucking and stumbling and wants to shut off, now while she is doing this I can put her in neutral and the problem stops. Sometimes she gets it bad enough that she dies on me altogether when I am driving off and I gotta put her in neutral while coasting and start her back up. After this occurs she can be fine for the rest of the day. Seems when she's running her normal temp she's ok. Alot of the boys I hang out with says it could be just a sensor. Map sensor or a oxygen sensor i dunno. So I thought I would just pop on here and see if anyone can help me out a bit before I start replacing stuff that I don't need too
Anyways thanks for ya time.

could be a sensor, could be a fuel related issue too have you changed your spark plugs in awhile. I know i have a problem similar to yours with my 04, well not exactly similiar mines more of a hard start issue when the engine is cold but might consider a tune up.

So it does it when the car is cold or has sat for some time (hours and cools off)? Sounds like a O2 sensor issue. Try disconnecting the O2 sensor (Primary one) and drive it for a day or 2 like that and see how it runs. It will throw a Check Engine light on with the sensor unpluged, but can help answer if it is O2 sensor related.

Thanks for the tips so far. Yes like you said John, after she has sat for an hour or so she can do it again. Now my g/f has the car today at work and lunch time she said the car run fine first thing this morning and when she went home for lunch the car was ok again so.......it comes and goes. One of my buddies has a Z out of service in his yard and were gonna take a few sensors of that car and try them on mine for a bit to see if we can find anything.

Well last night we changed the sensor on the intake tube and the one to the right next to the intake itself and the car is no better. Gonna try a few other sensors from the donor car tonight.

Does your car have headers? After putting headers on my car, it would react just like yours does now. (with a stumble and miss 30-40 seconds after a cold engine restart.) I converted the front single lead O2 sensor to a 4wire (heated) O2 sensor and the problem is solved.

yea mine does the same thing. i was told it was the cat so i replaced it and i got a cel for about 2 weeks and she ran like a champ, then after the cel went off it started the stumblin again so i think my next action is going to be replacing the sensor after the cat.

Sensor after the cat will not affect this. Trust me.

Yeah speaking about cats, the car does not have a cat on her. The guy I bought the car off removed it and put a straight pipe in it's place and a long cherrybomb at the end of that. I don't like that setup at all but it'll do for now, it's just a winter beater so..........

could be an EGR problem, mine did that exact same thing we changed it... and it fixed the problem.
