Hi folks,
Can you help me out here? Recently bought a 1996 Sunfire with a 2.2L 5-speed.
My E-test at Curb Idle came back fine, but I had problems when tested at 2766RPM.
My NOppm Limit is 505. My car blew 1137. Yikes.
Where do I start? Looks like the car had a recent front to back exhaust repair, and the Cat. looks like it was replaced not too long ago
EGR Valve? Plugs, wires? flush the coolant? I don't really want to throw a lot of money at this thing, so your ideas would be appreciated greatly.
Cheers,
Adam.
I would look into this
Verify the egr valve is working
Replace the catylitic converter (it is bolt on)
Replace the O2 sensor (yes I know you did not mention a check engine light, change it anyway)
Change the oil & spark plugs

How do I verify whether or not the EGR valve is working?
NO is usually caused by high temperatures beyond normal limits, is the engine running really hot? all i can think of
NOT CLOSING. If the valve does not close, the engine will idle rough or stall completely when you remove your foot from the accelerator. It may also hesitate when you try to accelerate. These are the same symptoms as a vacuum leak so don't assume the EGR valve is at fault. You must test it.
NOT OPENING. If the valve does not open, you will notice a small reduction in horsepower. The engine may knock or "ping" under acceleration. It may run a little hotter and seem to labor under load.
TESTING. Locate and remove the valve from the engine. This is usually accomplished by removing two bolts from the manifold and a vacuum hose from the valve's diaphragm housing. Be careful, exhaust systems get very hot quickly and stay hot for a long time. Once it is removed, inspect it closely. If it is damaged, dented, or parts of it are broken or loose, replace it.
f you want to do further testing, connect a vacuum pump o the diaphragm housing and apply a vacuum. The valve should hold the vacuum without leaking. If it does not, replace it. As you apply the vacuum, watch for the valve to open. If it does not, it needs more cleaning or replacement.
Good Luck.
Thanks, good information here.
This one has the electronic EGR and I don't see any vaccum lines connected to it. It has an electrical connector and two bolts holding it in place. I removed it yesterday and had a look, everything seemed to be in order, however I don't really know what I should be looking for.
Overall performance of the car is good. It idles smooth and does not lunge, ping or run poorly during low or higher speeds. I have a 10 day permit on it, so I drove it to work. I maintained about 70mph with no problem.
One thing I did notice is all four spark plugs needed replacing. They were burned on the bottom, like they were too hot, so I replaced them. The car's performance has been improved.
The temp guage for the coolant is well within normal readings, and I don't get a check engine light at all. I'm stumped!
Thanks for the suggestions so far.
Adam
