My 2000 Alero with an ld9 over heats when it sits still the temp will slowly climb but once i start moving it goes down until it reaches normal operating temp. If i crank the heat to max the car temp goes back down to operating temp. I just put a new radiator in less then 3,000 miles ago and just put a new 180* stat in last week and none of this fixed it. I have coolant pressure when i release the cap so i assume my water pump is working and my fans kick on like there supposed to. So what could be causing this air in the system? starting to go bad water pump?

i have same problem...the stock gauge seems to move alot when i idle, but my fan kicks on and brings it down...it will get most little more then 3/4th the way up, and that looks hott but i had a scanner on it at school and it only said 225 which is right when my low speed radiator fan kicked on...my teacher said around 240-260 is when you start to worry
Ok wasnt sure cause i the stock gauge goes to 3/4 and i have a cyberdyne coolant temp gauge and it will read 220 and i either kick on the heat to have it go back down or shut the car off before it goes any higher.

New thing is i drove it around until it warmed up (195-202*) then i parked it and let it sit to see how hot it gets. It got all the way up to 238* then dropped down to 188-194* and stayed there. Now my fans were on the whole time when it was parked so what could cause this?

Well, i would sugest you go and get the system flushed because you may have a blockage. My girls LD9 started this recently and i hooked up my scanyool to it and the fan would not kick on and i hear the relay clicking so i know her relay is good. also it would not hurt to throw a new rad cap on there. Also gotta make sure ur coolant mix is 50/50 water coolant. that could have a huge effect on cooling properties also. But get it flushed and go from there.
i flushed the system 2 times in the past 6 months 1st time when i put the new radiator in and the 2nd time when i just put in the new thermostat and it has new 50/50 mix coolant in it and i know the fans kick on cause i got out and popped the hood and looked at the fans. Not sure if it matters but i have the vulcan aluminum tank on there ill go down to autozone today and grab a new cap.

Jbody's are not programed to have the fan kick on until 223 degree's from the factory. Then to kick off at 218 degree's.
If your AC is not on and the car is sitting still them the temp is going to raise. That is normal. That's when the fan should kick on around 223 degree's, but that is 223 degree's based on the factory reading, not your aftermarket gauge.

No they wont kick on wihen u hit the ac button bc the car knows the ac is not.working.

I don't know, never tried. Since you have no ac system in the car sounds like your car is working properly, only thinkg to verify is the fan coming on at or around 223 degree's.

same deal here, and it max's out at 3/4 of the way when in bad traffic.....replaced the comp, 2 thermostats, water pump, flushed coolant. fans are kicking on, and everything seems to be working fine...but the temp still hits 3/4.
just picked up a fiberglass hood with some exhausts...should relive some of the heat :p

Post picture of your gauge in this 3/4 setting. I think everything is fine, but you are thinking it is not.

A very common problem with the 2.4 L cavalier's and as you can see one can spend a lot of money trying to fix the problem without any resolve. Try running the A/C more often, your car should run cooler because the electric fan runs consecutively with the A/C, unless your car is low on R134a, then you'll need an A/C recharge kit from Walmart or Advance Auto Parts, etc.
Now the electric fans do wear out just like other parts so your fan could be toast. I think it's around $50 for an aftermarket fan should that be the case.

Well sounds like state by somoene else with the ac system removed the car knows, so when you turn the switches on it does not turn on the fan, but 224 degree's is the proper temp for it to come on.

It is a common problem on the 2.4 L Cavaliers... there have been posts on here since 2006 with Z24 owners having the same problem.
If it is opperating as designed and within acceptable limits as decided by the manufacture, it is not a "common problem".
If you dont like the temps it runs at either use an auxiliary fan or controller, crank the heat, or find a way to not get stuck in slow traffic (dont follow to close either). Only one of the stock 2.4L cars I have owned has had the temp consistently go up to the 220-230 range. My 98 will occasionally go over 210 in heavy traffic, but it doesnt happen very often.
This is actually just a common occurance with these cars. Both my J's both eco's will run upto the 3/4 mark on the temp gauge (around 223ish) when sitting in traffic no ac on. Since thats as high as it goes i never really worried about it my fans would always kick in and bring it down. So i say this is pretty normal.
It is common because that is what it is designed to do.

So, if it wasn't an issue or 'problem' for you, why reprogram the ECU to have your fan turn on at a lower temperature and/or add a switch to turn the fan on? It's reasonable to guess right and say that you were having a problem with your car heating up, correct? Correct.

It was not a problem, but I did want my temps lower. More about power and performance, but nothing about it being a problem.
