I went to replace the fuel filter on my 97 Z24 and found that one end is threaded and one end seems to be clipped. The clipped end is metal with no visible clips and NOT black plastic with a white clip like every other GM fuel injected car I have worked on. Has anyone come across this? If so how do you release this metal fastener with no visible clips?
Here's how I finally got my stock fuel filter off of my 99 Z:
1. I got the Quick Disconnect tool set from AutoZone for about $8
2. Climbed under the car, undid the nut on the right side
3. Cut the left side of the filter off just to the right of the black clip with a hacksaw
4. This allows you to get the tool on there all the way (I tried it without cutting, and it wouldn't fit on far enough to disengage the clips)
5. The new filter installs and comes off a lot easier than the stock one
Here is a diagram I made showing where to cut:
It's not the easiest job in the world, but if you follow these instructions you will eventually get it.

Hey wow thanks for the detailed explaination and diagram. Looks like you had the same issues. I will check it out.
HAHA that;s a good one..I however did it a little different cause I had the same problems every single @!#$in time
What I did was disconnect the easy side first (the nut side) They I grabbed a cresent wrench and jammed it inbetween the quick connect and the tube that connects to it.
After moving it back and forth very hard, bending the filter itself it comes out. It takes time but it does come out.
My fuel filter has no black clips anyore and the inside quick connect whatever piece of crap gets replaced with the new filter.
Either way its not coming out easy
Just thought I'd give you a non cutting way
@!#$
I hate this GM engineering crap
I guess the idea of reading other posts on the SAME page isn't working properly.
