Hey Guys,
New to the forum. I did a search, but could not find any info. I have a 00 Sunfire, 2.2L 5 speed, and I think my slave cyl is shot. I want to try bleeding it first, before replacing it. It is hard to replace? I am mechanically inclined, and my dad is also, so I am not afraid to dive in on this, would just like some advice beforehand.
Thanks
WJB
Hate to tell you this but u do have to remove the transmission to replace the slave cylinder. It is mounted inside the trans, and unfortunately u do have to do this in order to replace it.I am not fluent enuff with the removal aspect, but others have had to the same thing. So u can either do it with a chiltons or haynes manual or take it to a shop.Hope this is useful to u.
Thanks alot for the info. We will try bleeding it tomorrow to see how that helps, and if not, I guess we will change it all while we have it out!!
Thanks,
Will
If ur resevoir is loosing fluid it's dumping into the transmission area onto ur clutch and flywheel, which inturn over time will destroy the surface of ur clutch and just make ur flywheel real greasy. That's what normally happens when the fluid level is low,if the fluid was full and just some air or trash in it u prolly b ok just to bleed it and install new fluid and be fine. But my guess ur fluid was prolly low and leaking inside, ouch.
Hey,
So my next question is, if I buy a cllutch kiet, will the slave cyl and hyd. release bearing come in the kit?
Thanks,
Will
Hey,
Actually, it has not lost any fluid. I have to start it in gear, and go from there. It shifts fine by RPM, so thats why I was wondering if we bleed it first, and then take it from there!!
Thanks,
Will

wait, so you're saying you have to put the car in gear before actually starting it? Does it take off right away? Sounds like the problem most of us have had before. My slave cylinder took a dump on me too and my clutch...well....i don't even want to get into that. But shifting by RPM? I'm not quite understanding what you mean by that, but i'm guessing you're shifting w/o disengaging the clutch?
Hey,
We just bled it, and the peddle is a little better, but I stilll have to start it in gear. Yeah, second gear you gotta shifty at 3,000 rpm, and the rest you can shift in at around 2,500. What do you think? Slave? Can I get the clutch, slave and relesase bearing in a kit?
Thanks,
Will

Most kits include just the clutch sometimes the throw out bearing varies on auto stores or dealers. The slave is a separate part u have to buy it separately.IF u are having to shift based soley on rpms sounds like ur clutch is going, normally the slave goes out,by leaking fluid, not just up and die.Do u have alot of miles on the car, sounds like the clutch has either been rode hard or its just a cheap clutch that decided to give out.U should not have to shift by rpms,I would go with a new clutch and bearing and heck do the slave since the trans will b out,it will save u some money later down the road if the slave decided to break.

thats what i was thinkin. But just to get ya an idea on price, my clutch included everything needed. That was $216 (somewhere around there) but labor.....i only paid half since my ex g/f was working the front desk. The total i paid was about 540
Hey Guys,
First, thanks for all the responses. I bought the care with 180,000km ( 111,000 miles. ) It now has 195,000km (121,000 miles. ) on it. The kid who I bought it from had exhaust and stuff done, so I think he rode it hard!!
Yeah, the slave does not leak. We bleed it out yesterday. Lotsa black fluid came out. It is still shifting the same, even though the peddle feels better!!
Thanks alot!!

i would say try bleeding it again until the fluid coming out looks new. if that does not bring the pedal up them it is the clutch master. located on the firewall.
see ya!
