My car broke down on me yesterday I was driving and it started to sufficate like it was gasping for air I was going to the service station to get rid of some trash. As soon as I turned in it cut off, it would turn over but not crank and did it did crank real fast and stopped before I could give it some gas it did this twice. The car is not getting any gas to the CFi carborator when I looked into the butterfly bowl I see or smell no gas, when I turn on the ignition I can hear the fuel pump prime itself. I'm thinking its a clogged fuel filter this is a 1988 Pontiac Sunbird 2.0 CFI, also before this I had 2 episodes of when I came to a complete stop the car would Idle real low like it was gasping for air like it was going to cut off but once I take off the would return to normal. Guys let me no what you guys think?
Well I've change the fuel filter and it still won't crank and while I had the fuel filter off I check the fuel pump to see was it working and it is.

i'm sorry but you weren't very clear as to what is going in. The 1988 Sunbird was never carborated only fuel injected.
We need you to tell us what happens if you jump in the car and turn the key, does it crank? or does it do nothing?
if a car doesn't start, theres always 3 things to check air, fuel, spark. So I think your on the right track except you weren't very clear.
Its cranking but is not get any gas to start up and its a TBI which is madeon to a carborator type set up.
try checking your computer for codes..

Which engine do u have,the 2.0 tbi?If so yeah u have ONE injector but looks like a carburator right.What u might have is ur fuel pump is on or humming but no fuel.IF that's the case do a PSI check of the fuel pressure.That to me is the first thing to check ur not getting fuel bc the fuel pump is going out and not pumping fuel at the regulated psi like 9-13psi which is required to alloy the car to run.Let us know ur status after doing this check and do check ur computer for codes it could show a code 54 low fuel pump voltage.If its the original fuel pump its probably shot,get a psi check done to verify,if it is the pump u r going to have to drop the fuel tank to replace it.
