Here are the instructions from the 1997 GM service manual, i'm combining some steps and hopefully not forgetting some.

1. disconect negatice battery cable.
2. disconect and remove ignition coil assembly. (IDI cover, coils, and spark plug boots)
3. remove camshaft position sensor connector on intake and oil pressure connector on exhaust side
4. for vehicles equiped with automatic transmissions, remove the trans fluid level indicator tube assembly from the exhaust cam cover and position aside
5. remove power steering pump and place aside. be sure not to disconet the lines
6. remove the vacuum line from the fuel pressure regulator and the fuel injector harness connector
7. remove fuel rail to camshaft housing retaining bolts
8. remove fuel rail from cylinder head as follows:
- cover injector openings in cylinder head
- cover injector nozzles
- leave fuel lines attached and position fuel rail aside (ontop of master cylinder)
9. disconnect, but do not remove the timing chain housing at the intake and exhaust camshaft housing.
10. remove camshaft housing cover to the camshaft housing retaining bolts.
- use reverse of the tightening procedure when loosening the camshaft housing to cylinder head retaining bolts (heres my crappy diagram, hope you can follow)

intake exhaust
8 9 9 8
4 1
1 4
2 5 5 2
3 6
6 3
10 7 7 10

- leave two bolts loosely in place in order to hold the camshaft housing while seperating the cam cover from the housing
11. remove cam housing to cylinder head bolts
12. push the cover off the housing by threading four of the housing to head bolts into the tapped holes in the cam housing cover
13. remove the two loosely installed bolts
14. remove the cover and discard the gasket
15. loosely reinstall one cam housing to sylinder head bolt in order to retain the housing during camshaft removal.
16. note the position of the chain sprocket dowel pin for reassembly
remove camshaft being carefull not to damage the cam or journals
17. remove valve lifters as follows:
- keep lifters in order to reinstall in their orignial location
- in order to minimize lifter bleed down, perform the following
- store lifters upside down on a level surface
- store the lifters in submerged clean engine oil
18. remove cam housing and gasket

I hope that helps you out a little

I was under the impression the cam gears had to come off......maybe im just not clear on what this is trying to say. also the cam carrier can stay on, the lifter removal part is not essential.

Oy I just had to get one out.. good thing it was a junkyard car... I had to break a few things because I got frustrated.

The cam itself is screwed to the cam sprocket and there are several screws inside the timing chain housing which have to be removed before you should even attempt to take the cam housing cover off.

The cam housing is also screwed into a few places inside the timing chain housing as I fould out -.-;.

It's not an easy job. and I have yet to successfully figure out how to get my timing chain housing cover off... -.-

it's a pain in the ass me says. here this might help
