hey i have the ceramic coated pacesetter header with custom catback .... i have the motor mounts so i didn't get a flex pipe welded in but i can't take the vibrating no more ... so i takin the motor mounts back out and putting in a flex pipe . should i weld the flange on too ? where the header itself meets the downpipe? or leave it ? i'm also getting a 36 inch resognater added too . thanksf ro all the rep[lys.
dont weld the flange....
if you have to remove the header or engine, you;d have to cut the header out....
flex pipe should be roughly where the flange is, within a few inches of it.
on the downpipe side of course...
does anyone have a picture of where it should be ? the muffler shop should know where to put it huh ? i just wanna make sure it goes in the right place.
mines right next to the oil pan.... straight piece of pipe there, so theres no bending of it really to get it to fit...
could u take a picture for me so i can see ? if u can i would appreciate it .
dude its 11 pm at night and wet outside....., if you look under your car right next to the oil pan its in the same exact place where the stock flex pipe was...
the exhaust only runs to the side of the oil pan, right underneath the crank pulley in one area.... thats the area.
ok ... i didn't mean tonight but thanks .. i appreciate everything man ..
notta prob, just remember, right under the crank pulley.... on the side of the oil pan....
Truthfully there is not a right or wrong place for a flex pipe. As long as it is in the exhaust after the header. the exhaust will flex.

i;ve seen people install it AFTER the first hanger right before the cat.... header still broke the welds....
you generally want a flex pipe to be near the front of the car before the first double hanger... especially on a 2.2 as we dont have the same setup as a 2.4 or ecotec where the header comes right off the rear of the engine and straight to the cat....
ours snakes around the oil pan almost like the letter C

ours snakes around the oil pan almost like the letter C. putting it beyond that double hanger can create too much leverage.
Yeah, if you try to put a flex pipe after the first hanger, it won't actually get to flex. The hanger is there to hold the exhaust in place and does not transfer very much movement from the engine past that point. Therefore more tension and flexing is put on the exhaust in between downpipe and hanger. That's why GM puts the flexpipe there. That's the entire point of the flex section, is to prevent movement in the rest of the exhaust system, and put undo pressure on the hangers and joints elsewhere.
