i just bought a 2000 cavalier 2.2 5 speed, when i take off in 1st around 1000 rps there is a rattle noise and also in every gear if i take off to low of a rpm i know there should be some kind of noise when your that low but it sounds like a heat shield or something, i was just wondering if any one has had this problem too and if so what was it. thanks
A couple questions:
1. Do you have an aftermarket exhaust system?
2. Does it sound like it's coming from the front or rear of your car?
3. Does your car feel any different taking off then say before this sound started happening?

it sound like its coming from the front and the guy who i bought the car from had a cat back exhust on it, and its been making that sound sence i bought it.
well i will tell you what happened to me. i bought my cavi used, its an 01, and she was great, and then about 6 months after i got her, i got the same symptoms..... but mine is a 2.4. well apperently the guy who had the car before me didnt know how to drive, and the motor had spun a rod bearing..... so i would definity get it looked at. but also it made a noise on decel when you are still in gear, but just rolling

Exactly what I was thinking. You can easily take that to an exhaust shop to get it checked out.

yeah im pretty sure thats most likely the problem, its probally hitting the sidewalls that the stock exhaust runs through or just hitting the car on the bottom, get under there and wiggle it alittle to see if its loose and moves, if so then theres your problem, make sure u have gloves or the car is cool because it will be hot, to the normal human
Could be the POS getrag Transmission.
getrags are known to make the "rattle" or "grinding" noise
its sparatic , and annoying at worst
its just the nature of the beast
do you have an intake? i know mine ratlles like hell
i have the same problem with my 01 2.4 liter. But mine was the tranny just because it is under such a load at low rpms, it probably isnt a rod bearing because i had that problem too, and that is like a tapping noise around 3000 rpms and then it really started hammering about 2 weeks after i spun it.
theres def a difference between a
RATTLE
and
a TAPPING NOISE
transmissions should rattle... being fluid filled, as long as everything is bolted tight you should have a rattle.
rattle is usually two loose pieces of metal rattling against each other.
