spark plugs&wires

i have heard that aftermarket spark plugs and wires could add a few horsepower. however i read that GM cars have very strong ignition systems in the first place, and no change will be noticed. is this true?

Good plugs and wires will ensure that you burn all the air and fuel mixture in the combustion chamber. If you are not currently burning all the air and fuel, then you would gain some power.

What motor do you have? The Eco and the 2.4 as far as I know dont use wires.

If you have a 2.2 OHV, definitely go with the MSD coils, a good set of wires (MSD, Magnacor, Accel, Nology, whatever) and some NGK TR6 plugs.

I have a 2200, and i have the msd ignition coils, i have ngk iridium plugs, and i have 9mm wires, but i need new ones, they are way to long for the car and i am loosing power with them probally.

I picked up my MSD coils today for $50 each (you need 2). I bought my Accel wires from Gravana for $27.99 (they are $35 now) and NGK TR55 plugs for $29

Ngl tr55, are they below ngk iridiums, or are they better?
Anyone know who makes a white plug wire or green, that is what i want.

The MSD coils might be a good addition for myself. Always like how I find out new things each day here.

I'll have a sig someday....................

The NGK TR55 plugs are the iridium IX plugs. As the number moves up (TR6, TR7) it advances one step colder.

If you're stock, save the money for something else because it won't make a difference.

I check my gap every year and replace the plugs & wires with new OEM ones every other year.

yeah im basically stock performance wise except for intake and catback. but would it be better to get them because of the increased airflow and gas mixture to make sure everything gets ignited?

No, it's not necessary. The atmospheric pressures remain the same on non-aspirated engines so the ignition and compression factors remain constant. You'd only need an upgraded ignition, plugs and wires if you were turbo/super charged or were running nos, but not for anything else. I've got a lot of bolt-on mods as well, but an upgraded ignition/plugs/wires would only be a waste of money.

A fresh set of plugs & wires every couple of years should keep your ride running at peak performance.

...ive got a set of msd coils on order, already running a set of 8mm wires, and gonna install the coils with acdelco plats when i get the coils. this should be good for my n/a set up (2.2l), yes? (spotabee?)

just outta curiousity, and to help the original poster, when i do a slightly higher compression n/a rebuild with nitrous, what other kinda ignition upgrade would you recommend? i am assuming colder plugs (ngk tr6 or 7s, i guess?), but what else? msd makes an ignition box or module for 2.2ls? anything else?

I thought ngk just made one kind of iridium plug, they have diffrent colder iridium plugs?
Is it a good idea to have the plug gap checked every once in a while, never had mine checked in a few years now, maby i need new plugs; could i be loosing power now?
thanks

^^ Alot of these questions have already been answered CORRECTLY and very helpfully in the FAQ!

So for those of you that don't know anything about ignition systems and upgrading them please go read it.

summary of the FAQ

plugs and wires and replacement coil packs dont gain you HP, it restores efficiency that you lose as parts wear

msd is upgraded ignition, can add more power due to complete combustion of everything in the chamber. costs around 450, but worth it. most cheapies wont get this far.

you dont have to have forced induction to upgrade ignition. plenty of tests have been posted showing up to 6hp gain on various cars 2 being jbodies. 1 was a sentra, and the others were distributor possesing sport compacts. the first 3 were dis.

iridum plugs dont make more power, they simply use a smaller electrode which means less energy for spark is lost IN AND THROUGH the electrode. everyone here should already know the larger the medium sound, electricity, force, energy, etc passes through the more of it is lost to the medium.

you dont need 9mm and 10mm plug wires. most times its basically just alot more insullation added. when choosing wires, select the ones with the lowest ohms per foot. NOT on how large the ENTIRE wire's diameter is made to be. easy way to fall for scams.

any accel universal wire 8mm, msd, etc will do fine... simply because most are stock, you;re not getting anything over older wires besides replaced efficiency.

crane and msd make really the only igntion amplifiers....

pretty much everything else is nothing more than an add on capacitor and reflects in price.

summary end.

..thank you, event. and yes, ive read the faq, several times, and each forum, and it has pages and pages and pages of info. just wanted to ask an opinion of the people more knowledgeable about 2.2l ignition systems than me, which is why i said spotabee (or event).

Thanks, sorry for the repeated questions.
How many ohms per foot should i look for when buying a wire?
thanks.

Ummm... NO!
Tr55's are stock resistor plugs.
Tr55ix would be iridium plugs
Tr6 would be one step colder resistor plugs.
And Tr6ix... take a guess..
And Tr7ix is the next step colder. As ngk doesn't make a resistor tr7.

40-60, but really on stock ignition, stock replacement stuff, not really gonna notice a difference.
