Ecotec Exhaust Questions Resonator and High Flow
Monday, October 17, 2005 12:38 AM
I know this post topic has been beet to death....but I did a Search and haven't came up with any direct answers. I got that I should go with a 2.25 for my car since it's N/A. But What Resonator Should be used? Whats an ideal Size or the Best Performing size? Or for the High Flow Cat- Is their a Certain one to use, I understand they are universal but anyone have one they Like?? Perferably with an Ecotec. Do you use both a cat and a Res? Or is it one or the other?

Im New to this Whole Deal....So if these Questions are off the wall im sorry. I had a Focus with header, off road pipe (cat eliminator), flex pipe and exhaust- That seemed alot easier.

Also what Muffler is good to get with a custom man. bent or compression bent exhaust- I see Magnaflow is popular but any Certain one??

Thanks for all your Help!!!!!!!!

Desiree

My Setup :

Pacesetter Header ceramic coated 4-1
Magnaflow Hi-Flow Cat (OBDII)
18" Vibrant resonator
Vibrant Catback

(Had to cut a part of the catback to put the resonator in, so you are better to get a shop to bend you some pipe)

For the resonator, you take what you want, I have an 18" but others put longer one, to tone down the sound, it all depend on your taste. For the cat, most people will suggest you the Magnaflow ones, I putted back the O2 sensor and no check engine...

on my 05 fire I have:
-Pacesetter 4-1 header
-Magnaflow OBDII Cat
-16 inch Magnaflow Res
-2.25 compression bent pipes
-Magnaflow Muffler

You'll need a cat to pass emissions, and not having one can hurt performance also. THe Res is totally optional. Not having one makes our car sound like an angry swarm of bee's, and you tend to back fire more. The length is totally optional. the longer it is, the quieter your car.

With res's and mufflers, what matters is what the core looks like. If the pipe inside is only perferated on one side, or looks like a cheeze grader, take a pass on those. they are restrictive. Magnaflow, Borla and Viabrant are the most common ones used by people here.

For bends, you want either compression or mandrell. Crush bends leave wrinkles in the pipe and that causes restriction, so stay away from that

Thanks for the input guys! I have about $400 spendable right now and I was going to spend half on the Nology Ignition setup for the Eco until I did a search on it and heard the bad News! Thanks for that input also I almost wasted $205 on somthing that would of did me no better than the stock setup!

Anybody have a Magnaflow P/N for the Cat they use- I see alot Available. I'm going for the 2.25. I want the most power I can get out of the Exhaust but I want it to sound half decent. Not Ricey but loud enough if that makes sense.

Im a dumb blonde but i thought the whole purpose of using the resonator was to remove the cat? I didn't know you could use both!

Also any good Magnaflow or Borla Muffler P/N's would be Appreciated!!

Thanks Guys!

Also there is a R & D Exhaust on Ebay with 9000 miles on it. Is that any good or a waste of time? What's the life of a Catback exhaust before Warping and Buildup takes place? Sorry for all the Questions!

Thanks Again!

THIS IS THE CAT I used on my car. i'd highlly suggest Gravana too, and so would other prople.

JUST MAGNAFLOW is a good place to buy magnaflow parts... or you could be like me, and get the part numbers there, then search them on E-bay.

All the parts I used (with part numbers) are in my regestry. Just keep in mind that magnaflow does not make the res I used on my car anymore

Deadbob is your Muffler with the dual outlets for Dual Exits? I guess your sunfire came stock with the dual exits if it was a gt. I have a Cavalier LS Sport Sedan would I have problems with makin the dual exits? Or if I stay Single i would just need one in and one out correct. I know it seems obivious but I don't want to screw it up! Thanks

Yes, 2.25 in duel 2 inch out

My car is an 05 Sunfire LSV, and only had a single exhaust. This pic would explane alot:

That cross pipe is actually far enough back that you only see it if your kneeling down behind the car. When I took that pic I was sitting down and about 10 feet back. Now, the only problem I could see you would having is not having a cutout on your bumper for the passenger side tip

D Hall wrote:Or if I stay Single i would just need one in and one out correct. I know it seems obivious but I don't want to screw it up! Thanks

That would be correct

Also i should mention that I believe that my driver side tip is pulling in some air. The passenger side tip has all the noise, and about twice the gas flow and the tip gathers about twice the soot. If that's the case, then I'm not getting all the performance gains that I should.

Just my opinion on this subject. If you have a mandrel bent Cat back 2.25" is fine but if you are doing custom job at a shop i would do 2.5. to make up for some loss on the bends they make.

From everything I've heard is that the power difference between bends is so minute that I really dont see the larger pipe being any help... all that'll do is move his power band higher into the RPM range. Besides he's already bought a 2.25 cat...

I called 20 Places and they all do crushed bends- This blows
One place said they do Compression but they can't Garuntee that their will be no Crushed bends-

Listen to this one.........I call and say I want my Exhaust setup in Madrel or Compression bent not Crushed bent-

Idiot: What Kind of Engine do you have?

Me: 2.2 Ecotec why does it matter?

Idiot: Oh the Ecotec, Crush Bends would be Fine it won't Change the Performance any

2nd Place -

Me: I'm looking to get my Exhaust done, I have a Cat, Mufflers, Exhuast Tips and I just need the 2.25 Piping in Madrel or Compression Bends

Idiot: What's that? I think we just do Crushed Bends and We use Walker Exhaust Pipe

Me: Click!

That's about right... I had the same problems when i was looking for a place that did my exhaust... I found one shop on the otherside of town that had a mandrel bender but was told that they "don't waist their time bending pipes on that machine for any car with less than 8 cylinders."

I ended up getting refered to a shop that a few people in AZJBO had work on their car.

Best bet, would be to make a post in your regon board and see if there is a place near you that people suggest. You can also check the club page and see if there is car club in your area, and see what they have to say
