Any 4.9 V8 swaps?
Saturday, December 24, 2005 7:32 AM
Any one on here have a 4.9 or 4.5 caddy engine in their car? I'm doing one and I figured there would be others but I can't find any. I'm very familuar with The cars but new to the forums.

I saw something on the web a couple years ago about some guy that does the Fiero stuff and the rumor was that he put a Northstar in a 3rd gen Cavalier but I never saw pics of the car or anything. I don't know if it was ever actually done. As far as I know nobody in here that I know of has either, the most popular swap next to the 2.4 or Eco seems to be the L67. Have you tried Google or www.ask.com? You might find something there.

the 4.9 is pre northstar and it dropped in really simple since it uses the same FWD trans pattern i just figured some one else on here had done it.

caddie motors arent really worth swaping

the 3800 s/c is 3 times the motor of any caddie motor

I thought about putting the Northstar with fwd trans from the Aurora in my 4 door last winter, but after talking with Russ Weisgarber I decided not to bother. Russ new a guy who put one into a Golf with minimal hassle as far as space went, but our strut towers were not wide enough to accomodate it.

Yeah, I was seriously considering the swap into a 95 Sunfire (with a 92 Northstar motor) but the frame rails aren't wide enough to accommodate the transmission (it's a BIG mofo).

If you were to chop the front end off and tube chassis it, you could do it quite easily. More than I wanted to get into though.

even the northstar

you can get 20 million parts for the 3800 s/c's

you cant for caddie motors

I am doing the swap really for no other reason then the sound of a V8, and I might go AWD if i can find a trans from an AWD Pontiac 6000. In its defense the 4.9 pushrod engine will make 300 HP with out to much work. As far as the N* goes it will bolt right to the 4t60 or 3t40 and they're 300 HP right out of an STS or ETC. There is also a place called HRC Performance that makes almost anything you would ever need to make from 250 to over 1000 HP. I guess it all comes down to how hardcore you want to be.

muhhahhahaha

even better than swapping in the STS-V s/c powered N*

N* are more known for oil leaks , the newer computers are VERY complicated , not a large aftermarket for performance parts

the 3800s/c , the fastest gtp is running 9's

just to be clear , if you want to swap in a caddie motor i say go for it , and im with ya

but my thinking is if your gonna go to all the trouble of swaping motors , is to use 1 you can get lots of parts for

thats the reason i say the 3800 s/c is the best possible swap

LMAO...You have obviously never driven one with any type of mods on it. All you have to do is swap out the valve springs (Z06 spring will swap right in.) and your good to go.

lol...Yeah I actually run a 3.0" pully with an intercooler and custom exhaust so yeah I would have to say I have heard about those things before. But I wasen't taking about that, you brought up that the L67 has NO top end and the mods you listed won't do jack to get rid of valve float above 5800rpm (which is why the top end is not as good as it can be).

The L67 actually has quite a bit of top end in stock form, not like the LS1 of course but it sure as hell has more than a 2.2, 2.4, or eco does. The only mods that you have to do to increase the top end of the L67 is swap out the springs and either swap to 1.9:1 rockers or swap out the cam (with the excpetion of exhaust and intake cause really if you don't know that then you shouldn't be modding the engine in the first place). All that can be done for under $1000, it will rev to 6500rpm+ and allow your other mods (pullies, exhaust/intake, cam. rocker, blah blah blah) to work well in the upper range without valve float. I hope that helps you understand why the top end of the L67 is limited in stock form.

i understand, i thought you were saying the L67 only needs valve springs to open up the top end
