I bought an MSD tach adapter on ebay and it is not what I think it is. it is a red box with a red wire and a white wire. I am almost certain that i wont be able to get a tach signal from it anyone with some imput.

If it is indeed an MSD tach adapter, it will work. If it's a no-name, ebay speacial, there are no guarantees. I have one on my 2.4, and it works (real MSD unit). It's been so long since I installed it though, that I don't remember how many wires there are, and what colors they are. I'm not sure what the color of the wire you want to hook to in your harness either.... ....I know it's the pink wire in the IDI harness on 2.4's, but that's really of no use to you, sorry.
you can do the same as the box for less than 5$. You only need 2 diodes and 1 other thing. I got the diagram from Haltech since the F5 doesn't work with DIS.
if you want it tell me. It's on one of my site, I just need to locate it.

I would love to see it if you can send it to me.

Tach adapter
If you can't find the diodes, I have a spare set that I could send you. They cost me like 2$ for the set. You need some wires tough to do the wiring but not alot.

wow thanks man I really apreciate it. few questions though
you have the d1&2 and zd 1 listed as to what kind of diode is needed, but there doesnt seem to be anything listed for the R1 1k.
also you said you have the parts If I were to through you some money could you just send me the diodes? ill pay for shiping PM me.

sure you need one? I had a remote start on 02 Eco and got a tach sig @ the ICM plug... didnt try to drive a tach with it though.

The R1 is just a 1k resistance.

ok, I'm going to try this... what color is the ecotec coil trigger wires?
Soooo.... I made one... can easily be done in 30min, using just two 1amp@100volt diodes.
coil 1 (orange) ---- >| ---\
|------ tach wire (green)
coil 2 (white) ---- >| ---/
I actually bought enough stuff to make 3 with a small PCB, So, if anyone wants one let me know.
Can you take actual pics of this? and how it all goes together?
I would also like pictures. I'm going to need a tach signal for a window switch.
My camera cant really take good pictures of it... since its only about an inch long and a half inch wide... with even smaller diodes.
Then of course the PCB would be wrapped in electrical tape or siliconed up waterproof.
wow thats great stuff. Im glad it worked for you. did you test it?

yup, i have my 5" ricer tach (my motor will spin 7500rpm, stock tach dont go that high... and 5" tachs are a good $100 cheaper on ebay than 3 3/8s so haters go fsck yourself) hooked up and it works great.
To give credit where credit is due, the actual design is courtesy of Ben Wenzel Jr. (go all motor ecotec's go!). I might make a couple using opto-isolators, but the install will be more difficult (there will be a ground and power hookup because an opto isolator needs power) but it'll protect the ICM from shorts.
Never ever pay $50+ for a tach adapter...
mabye you can awnser this. Ive been wondering if the tach is only going to show half RPMs like people say due to I think the coil packs?

If you hook it up straight to the white or orange wire, it will.
What my little adapter does (and in theory the haltec adapter but it hasnt been tested) is combine the two signals. The Ecotec still uses a wastespark/dis type ignition so the one wire we tap into is for the 1/4 cyls, and the other is for the 2/3 cyls.
if you're wondering what to wire it up to, check out the nology website, I was on there doing some research on their powercores, and they have all of the intallation instructions for the powercores on there ... which includes a wiring diagram of the coil pack, and labelled wires, which may help you out
