Quiet muffler
Friday, March 10, 2006 8:12 PM
I'm thinking about changing my muffler on my Z back to something that sounds more stock. I currently have a magnaflow oval 5x8 14" muffler installed and it sounds good but gives me too much of a headache on long drives even with a 25" resonator installed. I'm looking for the most quiet free flowing muffler. The key here is free flowing. I want to be able to hear the engine on hard acceleration, not the muffler. I have 2.25" piping. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Borla Turbo XL muffler. I have one on my Cav along with an 18" resonator, and I can definitely hear the engine over the exhaust on hard accelerations. While I'm cruising around town and on the highway its really quiet.

well you may want to get a Dynomax Superturbo. A number of people have it and with a resonator it will sound almost stock.

it says that the BORLA TURBO XL is like for big engines like v8 do it will work very good with the 2.4L????

"Turbo XL models are recommended for larger engines. Turbo models for smaller motors up to small-block V8s."

and what about the BORLA Turbo Mufflers if is the same? or doesnt give much performence. im also looking for something good but quite.

^^^thats why it works so well. Its a big muffler, but still straight through like magnaflow. I have one on my cavy and it worked wonders to quiet down my exhaust.

I'm definitely considering the Dynomax Super Turbo (if it is 18"). Does anyone that has one installed have a sound clip?

yeah it is big but will it affect the performance of the car??? do i will gain or lose performance????

Re: Quiet muffler

^^^absolutely not since it is a free-flowing muffler. The Dynomax SuperTurbo on the other hand is somewhat restrictive compared to other free flowing mufflers.

I'm wondering if the Borla Turbo XL is quieter than my magnaflow (18" long, 4x9)?

If I just added another 12" resonator behind my magnaflow 5x8 14" muffler would that quiet it down? I figure having that in addition to my 25" resonator might help, plus it would be cheaper than buying a new muffler.

Dave, its probably about as quiet as your magnaflow. I've heard your exhaust on those videos, and mine is probably just a tad quieter, though its hard to judge since I haven't heard it in person..

sorry for the thread jack but i was wondering about the resonators. Is there a way i can install this before my tipped muffler and still have it quieter? or do you need to have the resonator after the muffler? Im sick of my magnaflows loudness. I can hear the engine reving at 3-4K rpms to shifting point in an auto and was wondering how to quiet it down with out buying a new muffler. i think the dimensions of the muffler are some were around circle , 12" long, diameter of 5", with a tip of 4" diameter. If you guys could help me out that would be great. Again sorry about the thread jack!

^^^just have one welded in directly after the catalytic converter. I would look for something in the 18-22" range. And make sure it has a perforated-core and not a louvered-core.

DYNOMAXX is the best choice i had one my sunfire people used me as an example of good exhaust sound for a 4 banger!!!! I think they should put it in the perforrmance sticky or something!!!!! Its so cheap too and if your dirt poor you can buy a thrush(made by dynomaxx) I really think you should try it you wont be sorry And also you car wond sound like it belongs in The fast & furious!

Also the main problem with those rice cans( I am ashamed to admit I have one) they are stright throught. So its blasing loud I would start with a dynomaxx or thrush then if you still want quiter you can get a resanatior. But You may not even need one at that point i don't think unless you want stock sound then your just stupid for changing it in the first place!

i want to know the borla and the dynomax need a tip right?
if they dont do the same company sell tips or i have to look for it at any place??? (im lazy i dont like going around and around lol) i like to have everything in one hit and send it to be weld.

Re: Quiet muffler

and what type of dynomax is good.....
because the dynomax super turbo looks wierd and it wouldnt restricte the flow going in does turns?????
isn't like the ones straight in line better for the flow?

Re: Quiet muffler

well either one have good flow if you want the one that flows stright throught you can get that one i think they have one like that. But since i have been thinking baout changing mufflers my thoughts are they are both hig flow but the super turbo is the one i had and it was killer!!!! But yea if the muffler does a good enught job you shouldn't need a resanator. Which if you think about it this way my sunfire had stock exhuast with dynomaxx muffler. It sounded pretty much stock a little deeper untill you got on it then it sounded pretty mean. Now i have seen loads of j with fart cans on their stock systems and they were super loud compaired to my dyno maxx . They also give that sound that is the classic ricer fart! Yes they do need tips but if you are getting them weilded at the muffler shop they have should have all sorts of tips.

The Dynomax Super Turbo has an "S" bend with flow directors which basically passes the exhaust through the muffler three times before exiting, thus making it quiet. It's freer flowing than a stock muffler, but not as free-flowing as a straight-through design like the Dynomax UltraFlo. The UltraFlo is the best flowing muffler they make(not counting the race mufflers) but also the loudest. All things being equal - number of resonators, etc... - the Super Turbo is going to be several decibles quieter than the UltraFlo. So you have to decide what your top priority is - performance or noise level. Read: http://www.dynomax.com/ and: http://racetruck.tripod.com/muffler.html <==This second site is various mufflers tested on a 5.0 Mustang motor, but it at least gives you an idea on how each brand and model of muffler performs on the same setup.

sorry i didnt say it before.
i'm looking for both performance and noise level
i want:
-when the car accelarates slowly (normal without flooring it) sounds quite or almost stock.
-but when i accelarate fast i want to hear the engine and that the muffler can make a good, smooth not LOUD ("fart") sound. like i can hear the engine but people outside can hear the smooooooth quite sound of the muffler and not a WHAAAAAAA. lol
-when crusing is not annoying

well thats kind what im looking for.

i saw this two i with me an opinion if they are something of what i want. or which one gets closer.

Dynomax

A lot of people use Dynomax Superturbo on V-8's. I have a Dynomax for a Camaro SS so it should flow a lot better that that that which is suppose to replace our stock one.

Yes straight throught is best for maximum performance but But the Dynomax Super is not going to be a big hamper. Just because there is less noise does not mean you are going slower.
