Pacesetter Header Inexperience
Saturday, March 25, 2006 10:40 AM
Has anyone had this happen with Pacesetter?
Finally got an opportunity to put on my exhaust and find the Gasket, provided in kit, is not there. Is this gasket required or has anyone reused the original equipment donut. I have not torn anything apart so I am unsure what quality this 'donut' will be in.
Likely Carquest, Autozone, Napa would have a replacement close enough?
All help appreciated!

Thanks Guys, Wayne

Wayne,
Look in the box again 99% of the customers that email us and state this they find it in the box. It is normally in a white or brown cardboard, just 1 sheet on either side of the gasket, so basically you are looking for a sheet of cardboard 3" X 16"

Otherwise the OEM one is re-useable....

Yes I see exhaust header gasket but isn't there a gasket for the header to downpipe connection? Thank-You for your speedy response.

Nope, only gasket needed is that one the down pipe needs to be clamped or welded to the stock exhaust.

Have there been any issues with leaking around the flare on the down pipe and the flare from the header?

id just reuse the OEM if its still in good shape, otherwise go pick up an OEM one.. i heard the one pacesetter supplies isnt very good...

No,
The ball n socket style downpipe to header connections done use gaskets.

You're thinking like a 4-2-1 where the ointing parts are flat.

Pacesetter and RK 4-1 for the 2.4 are ball n socket style.

I just reused my hexahust gasket because i've been told my MANY people (including a pacesetter employee) that the included gasket is worht about as much as a pile of poo

Eh if you want extra piece of mind, Go out and buy yoursef a new OEM Header Gasket, they're only like what? 13 bucks or so? I forget.

I personally reused my gasket, haven't had any problems since.

just make sure that after a few times of getting it hotm cooling itm and getting it hot again, that you check the bolts on the header for tightness, the heat tends to make the bolts loose.

I had one the first time I had my exhaust built. I couldn't use the included down/intermediate pipe, since the bends were worng for my car, so I had to have a new socket end made. It wasn't at the right angle to the header, so I had a new one made, and its worked fine ever since. You shouldn't have any issues using the included down/intermediate pipe.

Header ON! I threw that thing on this afternoon. Had a couple small hiccups but managed.
Couple concerns I have:
1>>>Seems to me there is a lack of support of the exhaust system until near the rear. Will this lead to premature failure of the welds or near the welds of the tube to flange on the header?
2>>>The O2 sensor, I am about 3/4 inch sort on rope. I moved some harnesses around and wiring 'reaches' now but is WAY too tight going to the sensor itself, is there a 'coupling' I can place between the the connectors to gain a little back or must I look for an O2 sensor with a longer lead?
The down-pipe is only clamped to the converter so I was easy on it tonight driving home from my tinkering garage hence I was unable to get on it but I did notice the sound of exhaust rushing through the tubes. Sounds like flowage to me. Can't wait to get the Free flow converter and muffler welded on Monday.
Well if you all have any comments on the above thoughts I'd greatly appreciate it. Oh yeah I didn't get the memo until now about the gasket and I used Pacesetter's Gasket, I did however coat it with Copper Gold and hopefully that will help.
See ya, Wayne

what are you guys using to cut the exhaust piping? I had a hell of a time trying to go at it with a hacksaw and it was a no go.

So I need to buy something cheap from Lowes or Home Depot, what do you suggest?

^^^ Get a angle grinder and don't go smaller that the 6" ones. If you want the best, get a Metabo, 10,000 rpm no load speed. That thing is a beast.

2 hours worth the work, and 2 days of sorness was the result of going through the exhaust pipe with a hacksaw.

1)the stock system is the same way

2)there is a bracket that is holding the plug , you need to pull the plug off the bracket , that should give you enough

I have a question about welding...........do i have to do anything special when welding with the ceramic coating, and where do i cut the piping so it matches up so its easier to weld........are the directions correct?

was it hard to install the header and remove the the stock one. did anyone have to tilt the motor or anything to fit it in there?

Funny because I've had the pacesetter for several months and several thousand miles without any sort of issue

i just put mine in today. the downpipe was angled upward, and totally did NOT match with the catalitic converter inlet. im screwed right now, im gonna have to make some major n*gg*r rig to get this thing to the exhaust shop to have it welded up. thanks pacesetter!!! oh, and the clamp they supplied, DOESENT EVEN FIT AROUND THE DOWNPIPE!!

oh, and why put the 02 bung on the passenger side of the car? why not on the drivers, since thats where the original connector is? i found myself extending the harness over 2 feet!

i just hope i can get it to the exhaust shop without any major problems....i didnt buy it from pacesetter, i bought it brand new from someone who totalled their car so im SOL if this thing blows up my motor cuz its not made right!!

if the o2 bung is on the wrong side, then you got a header made for the n-body 2.4 not the J

no...it fits the engine perfect, and it fits everything else fine. just not the cat converter, and the o2 sensor bung is on the wrong side...but that wasnt a big deal.

i had to get that muffler wrap stuff...and hopefully that stuff will hold it well enough to get me to the exhaust shop (8-10 miles) tomorrow morning to have it welded up.

this can be done in the street...but itll need at least 2 people and one fully day...if not 3 people...or one skillful person and 2 days...etc etc...

if anyone needs pictures, ill take em...i took some when i was doing the install, i was gonna do a write-up, but when my friend arrived to help i stopped stopping to take pictures at every step cuz i didnt wanna annoy the guy who was helping me for free..
